Reported Speech

Ex:1. Change the following sentences into Indirect Speech.

a. "Please speak a bit slowly so that I can take the notes correctly", I said to the teacher.

- I requested the teacher to speak a bit slowly so that I could take the notes correctly.

b. " Leave the room at once and do not show me your face again", said the officer angrily to the
peon.

- The officer angrily commanded the peon to leave the room at once and not to show him his
face again.

c. "Let's invite some friends to Sumi's birthday", said the mother. " Let's not", said the father.

- The mother proposed that they should invite some friends to Sumi's birthday. The father
opposed the idea.

Note : Let is often used to make proposals; the reporting verb is changed to suggest/propose.

d. The stranger said to me, " Who are you? "

- The stranger asked me who I was.

e. He said, " Thank You! "

- He thanked me.

f. The saint said, " May God bless you! "

- The saint prayed that God might bless me/ The saint blessed me.

Ex. 2: Report this conversation between Sarita and Puneet in Indirect speech.

Sarita :Where's Indu?

Puneet : Gone for her dance class.

Sarita: Does she go for her lessons everyday?

Puneet: No, only twice a week.

Sarita asked Puneet where Indu was. Puneet informed her that Indu had gone for her dance
class. Sarita wanted to know whether she went for her lessons everyday. Puneet told her that
she went only twice a week.
