Catalog Data: Introduction to power system planning and reliability: definition,


objectives and regulations. Power generation reliability: definition,
techniques and indices, generation expansions. Transmission and
distribution reliability evaluation. Optimal operation of power system:
economic dispatch of thermal generation units, unit commitment,
optimal power flow, locational marginal pricing, power system
security. Introduction to power system stability and control: basics of
power system stability, types of power system stability, transient
stability analysis, frequency regulation techniques.

Course Objectives: This course provides students with understanding of various aspects
related to the planning, operation, control and reliability of power
system. This course will also provide students with understanding of
the regulatory and industry standards related to real-world power
system case studies.

2. Applying techniques for optimal operation of power system.
3. Appling techniques for optimal investment and expansion of power system.

Attendance is mandatory. To that end,


attendance will be taken every lecture. All

Grading policy: Final Exam 40 %

Computer Usage: students are encouraged to write/use computer programs for


mathematical modelling. Students are encouraged to use Power world software to conduct
several analysis to understand power system planning and operation.

Attendance: Class attendance will be taken and the University policy on absence
will be followed.
