Assignment-02

The document outlines an assignment on modern physics, focusing on quantum mechanics and the behavior of particles in potential wells. It includes problems related to the Schrödinger equation, energy eigenvalues, orthogonality of eigenfunctions, expectation values, and quantum tunneling. The assignment also explores concepts such as zero point energy, harmonic oscillators, and transmission probabilities through potential barriers.

PHN-007: Modern Physics

Assignment - 02

1. Consider a particle of mass 0 m0 and energy 0 E 0 trapped in a potential,

(
0 −a ≤ x ≤ a;
V (x) =
∞ otherwise.

Write and solve the corresponding Schrödinger equation and obtain the energy eigenvalues
and eigenfunctions.

2. Assuming the width of the box to be 20 nm in the preceding problem, calculate the zero
point energy of the electron and express your result in electronvolts.

3. Show that the energy eigenfunctions, obtained in Problem 1, corresponding to different

eigenvalues are orthogonal, taking the first three for illustration.

4. Calculate the expectation values of position < x > and of momentum < px > of the
particle (in the n = 2 state) trapped in the potential defined in Problem 1.

5. Evaluate the probability of finding the particle trapped, in 1-D infinite potential with
walls at x = 0 and x = a, between x = 0 and x = a/2 when it is in the n = 2 state.

6. For an electron in a 1-D infinite potential well of width 1A°, caluculate (i) the separation
between the second and the third energy levels; (ii) the frequency and wavelength of
the photon corresponding to a transition between these levels; (iii) in what region of the
electromagnetic spectrum is this frequency/wavelength?

7. Show that the energy and the wavefunction of a particle in a square well potential of finite
depth V0 reduces to the energy and wavefunction in a square well with rigid walls in the
limit V0 → ∞, assuming the width of the potential to be the same in both cases.

8. A 1eV electron got trapped inside the surface of a metal. If the potential barrier is 4.0eV
and the width of the barrier is 2A°, calculate the probability of its transmission.

9. Show that the zero point energy of a linear harmonic oscillator, 21 ~ω, is a manifestation
of the uncertainty principle.

10. A beam of electrons is incident on a barrier 5eV high and 0.25nm wide. Find the energy
of the incident beam assuming 1% of it gets through the barrier.
