Projectile+Motion+Simulation+Lab+AP+Physics+1+Fillable+Form

The document outlines a lab activity for AP Physics 1 focused on projectile motion using a simulation from PhET. Students are instructed to measure and record various parameters such as range, maximum height, and time of flight for different launch angles, both with and without air resistance. The lab also includes analysis questions requiring graphical representation of the data collected.

Projectile Motion Simulation Lab AP Physics 1 Name: ___________________________________________

1. Open the Projection Motion Simulation from PhET. http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/projectile-motion

2. Set the initial speed to 16 m/s and choose the cannonball as your projectile. Air resistance should be OFF.
Use the “scope” and the “measuring tape” to measure to measure the specified values and record in the table.
Launch Maximum Height above Launch Point
Range (m) Time of Flight (s)
Angle (º) (measure vertically from horizontal) (m)

2. Now repeat those launches with the air resistance turned on. You do not need to record every data point but try
several and then describe qualitatively what happens to the range, maximum height and time of flight compared to the
case with no air resistance.

3. Change the initial height of the cannon to 7.00 meters. Using the same initial velocity as before (16 m/s) measure
the max height (measured from the ground), time, and range for the following launch angles.

Maximum Height above Launch

Launch Point (measure vertically from
Range (m) Time of Flight (s)
Angle (º) ground)

Analysis Questions
1. Graph Range vs. Launch Angle from your data in the first table. Draw a smooth curve of best fit. What angle
results in the greatest horizontal distance traveled?

Insert the graph in the space below.

2. Graph Range vs. Sine(2xLaunch Angle) for the data in the first table. Find the slope of the line of best fit,
including units.

Insert your graph in the space below.

3. Graph “Maximum Height above Launch Point” vs. Launch Angle from your data in the first table. Draw a
smooth curve of best fit. What angle results in the greatest vertical height?

Insert your graph in the space below.

4. Finally, examine your data in the second table. Which angle, of the ones tested, resulted in the greatest range
for the projectile in this situation? Was it the same angle you found in the first table?
