MCB1010 Accelerated Calculus I Number:

2023-2024, Fall Semester
Midterm Exam Name Surname:
November 21, 2023
Duration: 90 Minutes Score:

(1 - 12 pt.) Find the centre and radius of the circle x2 + y 2 + 6x + 8y − 96 = 0.

Solution. Given equation can be converted to the standard equation of a circle
(x−h)2 +(y −k)2 = r2 where (h, k) is the centre and r is the radius, as follows:

x2 + y 2 + 6x + 8y − 96 = 0
(x + 3)2 − 9 + (y + 4)2 − 16 − 96 = 0
(x + 3)2 + (y + 4)2 = 121 = 112 .

Therefore, the centre of the circle is (−3, −4), and radius of the circle is 11.

(2 - 13 pt.) Sketch the graph of the piecewise defined function f (x) = −1, x = 1,

 1
− 2 x + 1, x > 1.
Find the left and right limits of f (x) at x = 1. Is this function continuous at
x = 1? Explain your answers.
Solution. The graph of the function below:

lim f (x) = lim (x2 − 4) = 12 − 4 = −3

x→1− x→1−

1 1 1
lim f (x) = lim − x + 1 = − · 1 + 1 =
x→1+ x→1− 2 2 2
Since limx→1− f (x) ̸= limx→1+ f (x), then limx→1 f (x) does not exist. There-
fore, f (x) is discontinuous at x = 1.

x + 11 − 4
(3 - 13 pt.) Evaluate lim .
x→5 x−5
Solution. First, try the substitution method:
√ √
x + 11 − 4 5 + 11 − 4 0
lim = = .
x→5 x−5 5−5 0
Now, multiply both√the numerator and denominator by the conjugate of the
radical expression ( x + 11 + 4) to get the result:
√ √ √
x + 11 − 4 x + 11 − 4 x + 11 + 4
lim = lim ·√

x + 11 − 4
(4 - 12 pt.) How should the function be defined at the point 5 to be contin-
x−5
uous there? Give a formula for the continuous extension to that point.

x + 11 − 4
Solution. Observe that is undefined at 5. From Question 3, we
x−5
know that √
x + 11 − 4 1
lim = .
x→5 x−5 8
1
Therefore, if we (re)define the function to be at x = 5, we obtain a continuous
8
function there. So, the required continuous extension is
√
 x + 11 − 4 , x ̸= 5,

F (x) = x−5

Solution. If u = u(x) and v = v(x), then

Using above formulas, we obtain

(6 - 12 pt.) Evaluate f ′ (0) if f (x) = tan(cos(x2 )).

Solution. Applying the chain rule, we obtain
d
f ′ (x) = sec2 (cos(x2 ))(cos(x2 ))
dx
= sec (cos(x ))2x(− sin(x2 ))
2 2

= −2x sec2 (cos(x2 )) sin(x2 ).

Thus
f ′ (0) = −2 · 0 · sec2 (cos(0)) sin(0)
= −2 · 0 · sec2 (1) · 0
= 0.
