ASSESSMENT 5

NAME : Minenhle Portia

SURNAME : Mabika

STUDENT NO : 22311769

ASSESSMENT NO : 5

DUE DATE : 18 October 2024

Question 1:

Facet Example
Facet 1: Educational Guidance Choosing appropriate subjects in school based on
personal strengths and career aspirations.
Educational guidance focuses on helping
individuals with issues related to their academic
and educational development. It helps them
understand their strengths, weaknesses, and
interests, and how these align with their
academic pursuits.
Facet 2: Career/Vocational Guidance Offering advice on CV writing or preparing for job
interviews.
This type of guidance helps individuals identify
their career paths, make informed decisions
about their future jobs, and prepare for entering
the workforce. It involves understanding the job
market, required skills, and personal goals.

Facet 3: Personal/Social Guidance Counseling students on how to deal with peer

pressure or personal conflicts.
Personal/social guidance addresses emotional,
psychological, and interpersonal issues. It aims to
develop personal skills such as communication,
conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence,
enabling individuals to handle social relationships
effectively.
Question 2:

Apply Egan's skilled helper model to help Sipho assist Naledi in solving her problem.

Stage 1: The Current Picture (Exploration)

Question: "What is going on?"

Application: Sipho should help Naledi explore her feelings about the situation. She needs to express how
uncomfortable she is with Mary copying her work and her fear of losing their friendship.

Stage 2: The Preferred Picture (Clarification)

Question: "What do I want instead?"

Application: Sipho should guide Naledi to envision what outcome she desires. Naledi wants to maintain
her friendship with Mary but also be able to say no to copying assignments.

Stage 3: The Way Forward (Action)

Question: "How might I get what I want?"

Application: Sipho should help Naledi develop practical steps to address the issue. This might involve
Naledi having an honest conversation with Mary about her discomfort with the copying while reinforcing
their friendship. She could also offer to study together instead.
Question 3:

3.1 Betty shows empathy for Pertunia

No, Betty does not show empathy for Pertunia. Empathy involves understanding and sharing the feelings
of others, but Betty dismisses Pertunia’s emotional distress by focusing on the benefits of marrying
David, such as wealth and social status. Instead of acknowledging Pertunia's love for Fezile and her
discomfort with marrying David, Betty tries to rationalize the situation with materialistic reasoning,
ignoring Pertunia’s emotional conflict.

Reason 1: When Pertunia expresses distress over her forced marriage, Betty's response is focused on
David's wealth rather than Pertunia's feelings.

Reason 2: Betty downplays Pertunia’s concern about David’s age and lack of love, suggesting she should
be thankful for marrying a rich man.

Reason 3: Betty interrupts Pertunia when she tries to explain her feelings, dismissing her with
statements like "you will learn to forget Fezile."

Reason 4: Empathy would require Betty to validate Pertunia’s emotions, but instead, she offers practical
advice based on external factors, such as social recognition and financial gain.

3.2

The human right most applicable here is the Right to Freedom of Choice in Marriage (Article 16 of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights). This right includes the freedom to marry and the right to not be
forced into marriage against one’s will. Betty’s responses do not respect Pertunia’s autonomy or her
right to choose her own partner based on love and personal choice.

3.3

The Right to Freedom of Choice in Marriage is applicable because Pertunia expresses that she loves
Fezile and does not want to marry David, yet she is being pressured to marry someone much older
purely for financial gain. Betty supports this forced arrangement, disregarding Pertunia's personal desires
and right to make her own choices in marriage, thus violating her freedom to choose whom to marry
based on love and personal feelings.
