Introducing standardize measurement

There were about 25,000 measurement unit in Paris only.

The idea is to create measurement that rely on nature.

Using the Paris Meridian as base measurement to further

calculate the distance between north pole to the equator.

It took 7 years to complete.

One 10,000,000th of the distance from north pole to

equator

SI UNIT

The International System of Units consists of a set of

base units, derived units, and a set of decimal-based
multipliers that are used as prefixes.

Based quantity/unit - Any quantity that can not be derived

from any physical quantity ( time = s )

Derived quantity/unit – Any quantity that derived from

based quantity. ( velocity = m/s )

Decimal-based multipliers – 1012 ( Tera ) 10-9 ( nano )

SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

§ Special way to write numbers especially very small or large numbers

§ Easier to do calculation.
§ Standard representation
§ Save some space too!!

EXAMPLE
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

S Solve the following values using scientific notation.

S 0.00000256 m x 0.00000014 m
S 4.9 x 102 + 7.9 x 103
S 4.9 x 106 – 7.9 x 10-5
S (9 x 10-1) x (3 x 1010)
S (3.5 x10-6) / (5 x 10-2)

UNIT CONVERSION

S Using dimensional method to tackle any unit conversion

questions.

S Convert the following values into SI unit.

S 50 mm2
S 45 km/h
S 750 g/cm3
S 205oC

UNIT CONVERSION
Convert 50 mm2 to SI unit

• Find any related unit conversion ( Length must be in meter (m) )

• 1 mm = 1 x 10-3 m

• Identify the power of given unit ( in this case mm2), Therefore we have to square both sides.

• (1 mm)2 = (1 x 10-3 m)2 à from exponent product rule, then we will get the answer below

• 1 mm2 = (1 x 10-3 m) (1 x 10-3 m) = 1 x 10-6 m2

• Arrange the unit conversion as same unit in the opposite position in order to cancel out the unit.
• Answer must be in correct unit & scientific notation.

• 50 mm2 .1 x 10-6 m2 = 50 x 10-6 m2 = 5 x 101 x 10-6 m2 = 5 x 10-5 m2

UNIT CONVERSION
Convert 750 g/cm3 to SI unit

• Find any related SI unit conversion ( mass must be in (kg) and length must be (m) )

• 1 kg = 1 x 103 g & 1 cm = 1 x 10-2 m

• Identify the power of given unit ( in this case cm3), Therefore we have to cube both sides.

• (1 cm)3 = (1 x 10-2 m)3 à from exponent product or power rule, then we will get the answer below

• 1 cm3 = (1 x 10-2 m) (1 x 10-2 m) (1 x 10-2 m)= 1 x 10-6 m3

• Arrange the unit conversion as same unit in the opposite position in order to cancel out the unit.
• Answer must be in correct unit & scientific notation.

• 750 g . 1 kg . 1 cm3 = 750 kg = 7.5 x 102 kg = 7.5 x 105 kg / m3

1 cm3 1 x 103 g 1 x 10-6 m3 (1 x 103 ) (1 x 10-6 m3) 1 x 10-3 m3

UNIT CONVERSION
Convert 205 0 C to SI unit

• Find any related unit conversion ( SI unit for temperature is Kelvin (K)

TK = TC + 273.15

• Identify the power of given unit ( not applicable )

• Substitute the given value of TC = 205

TK = 205 + 273.15 = 478.15 K
