1. A 2m wide strip is placed at a depth of 1.5 m within a sandy clay, where, c'=10 kPa. ϕ'=26°,
and γ=19 kN/m3. Determine the maximum wall load that can be allowed on the foundation
with a factor of safety of 3, assuming general shear failure.

2. A square footing has a dimension of 1.2 m x 1.2 m has its bottom 1 m below the ground
surface. c'=15.75 kPa. ϕ'=30°, γ=18.11 kN/m3 and γsat=19.28 kN/m3.

I. if the ground water table is located at a depth of 1.2 m below the ground surface, compute the
allowable load that the footing could carry if it has a factor of safety of 3.
II. find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil if the ground water table is 0.5m above the
bottom of the footing.
III. find the ultimate bearing capacity of soil if the ground water table is 3 m below the ground
surface.
IV. find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil if the ground water table is at the bottom of the
footing.

3. A circular footing with a 1.5 m diameter is to be constructed 1.22 m below the ground
surface. The subsoil consists of a uniform deposit of dense soil having the following strength
parameters: angle of internal friction,ϕ′=25∘, unconfined compressive strength, qu=96 kPa
(qu=2c'), unit weight of soil,γ=20.12 kN/m3.

I. compute the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil.

II. compute the gross allowable bearing capacity of soil using a factor of safety of 3.
III. compute the total allowable load that the footing can carry.

4. A design requires placing a square foundation at 1.0 m depth to carry a column load of
1500 kN. The soil properties are: c'=15 kPa. ϕ'=24° , and γ=18.5 kN/m3. What should be the
width B of the foundation? Use FS=3.

5. Considering local shear failure, compute the ultimate bearing capacity of a strip foundation
of width 1.25 m. The depth of the botom of the footing is 4.5 m below the ground surface.
For the soil, c'=50 kPa. ϕ'=10∘, and γ=19.2 kN/m3.
