for the questions.
Instructions :
1. Al questions of
PART -A are compulsory.

PART -A
Marks -- 25
1. Choose the correct answer:
lx10=10
(a) (Working stress / Load
factor/ Limit state)
method of design is based on elastic
theory.
(b) Standard values of
stipulated in imposed loads are
875. (Part-1/Part-2/ Part-3) of IS

(c) In limit state of collapse in flexure, the
relationship between the stress-strain
distributions in concrete is assumed to be
(parabolic /straight linelcubical).
(d) The distance between the resultant compressive
force and tensile force is known as (effective
depth/neutral axis/ lever arm).

(c) If the area of the steel provided is less than

that required for balanced section, it is known
as (under/over) reinforced section.
() Maximum value of percentage of steel for
M 20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 steel is
(0.69/0.72/0.96).
(g) The portion of the slab which acts integrally
with the beam to resist loads is called
as (flange/web) of the T-beam or L-beam.
(h) In one way slabs bending takes place in
(shorter/ longer) direction only.
(i) Vertical compression member whose effective
length' is less than three times, its least lateral
dimension is a (column/strut / pedestal).

78/Cv-503/DoRCCS(N) (2)
G) Spacing of longitudinal bars measured along
the periphery of the column shall not
exceed
(0.75 d/300 mm/450mm).
2. Fill in the blanks :
1x10=10
(a) The maximum area of tension
shall not be more than
reinforcement
(b) Limiting value of moment of
resistance for
mild steel and M25 grade of concrete is

(c) The main reinforcements in slab are generally

bent up at a distance of from the
centre of supports.
(d) The of a compression member is
defined as ratio of effective length of
compression member to appropriate radius of
gyration.
(e) is the maximum pressure which the
soil can carry safely without the risk of shear
failure.

() In reinforced and plain concrete footings, the

thickness at the edge shall be not less than
for footings on soils.

78/Cv-503/DoRCCSN) (3) [Tum over

(g) The critical section for punching shear in
footing shall be at a distance from
the face of the column.

(h) Minimum grade concrete is used for

post-tensioned members.
(i) A stretched element used in a concrete
member of structure to impart pre-stress to
the concrete is called

is basically concrete in which internal

stresses of a suitable magnitude and
distribution are introduced so that the stresses
resulting from the external loads are
counteracted to a desired degree.

3. State true or false : 1x5=5

(a) Neutral axis is the axis at which the stresses

are maximum.

(b) In under reinforced section the steel

reinforcement reaches the yield value first.
(c) Whenever the value of actual shear stress
exceeds the permissible shear stress of the
concrete used, the shear reinforcement must
be provided.
78/Cv-S03/DoRCCS(N) (4) 1550(W)
(d) Distribution reinforcement is provided in
longer direction in two way slabs.
(e) The failure of the short columns is due to
their buckling.

PART -B
Marks-45

4. Find the ultimate uniformly distributed load that

can carry safely by a beam of size 300 mm x 400
mm. The span of the beam is 4 m. The beam is
reinforced with 3-20 mm diameter bars of Fe 415
steel. Take M 20 concrete. 9

5. Find the reinforcement required for an RCC

beam 250 mm x 450 mm (effective). The beam is
subjected to a factored moment of 220 kNm. Use
M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.

6. Find the thickness required for a simply supported

roof slab for a room 6.5 x 3.0 m. The slab
is carrying imposed load of 4 kN/m. Use M25
mix and Fe 415 steel.

7. An RCC column is to be provided in a building

to carry an axial load of 1200 KN. Design the
column assuming C,miaK0.05 D and using M20
concrete and Fe 415 steel. 9

8 Find the thickness required for a footing to carry
column load of 800 KN. The size of the column
is 400 mm x 400 mm. The safe bearing capacity
of soil is 180 kN/m². Use M20 concrete and
Fe 415 steel. Also perfom the necessary shear
check.

9. An RCC beam 300 mm x 400 mm is reinforccd

with 5-20 mm diameter bars (cffective). It is
subjected to a design shcar force of 210 kN,
Design the shear reinforcement if it is necessary.
Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 stecl. 9

10. Differentiate between : 3x3=9

(a) Limit state and working stress method of

RCC design.
(b) Pre-tensioning and post-tensioning method of
pre-stressing.
(c) Under reinforced and over reinforced section.
