Answer All Questions

Question 01

I. Explain the working principle of three-phase induction motor. Explain why the rotor of an
induction motor cannot run at synchronous speed?

II. A 10 kW, 400 V, 4 pole, 50 Hz delta connected three-phase induction motor is running at no
load with a line current of 8 A and an input power of 660 W. At full-load, the line current is
18 A and the input power is 11.2 kW. Stator effective resistance per phase is 1.2 Ω and
friction and windage loss is 420 W. For negligible rotor ohmic loss at no load, calculate:

• Stator core loss

• Total rotor losses at full load
• Total rotor ohmic losses at full load
• Full-load slip
• Internal torque and shaft torque
• Motor efficiency

Question 02

I. Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDCM) is the latest addition to the family of DC motors.

What is the major difference of BLDCM when compared with the conventional DC motor?
What are the inherent advantages of BLDCM with regard to that difference?

II. Sketch the internal structure of the BLDCM and briefly explain how the motor operation takes
place with help of that diagram.

III. Compare the main three types of stepper motors based on their construction principle.

IV. Sketch the pole arrangement of 4/6 pole 2 phase permanent magnet stepper motor including
the value of basic step angle.

Question 03

I. Compare speed-torque characteristics of DC series motor with DC shunt motor. List the
applications of each motor considering their speed-torque characteristics.

II. What are the factors need to be considered before starting of DC shunt motor?

III. A 200 Volts D.C. Shunt motor takes 27 A at rated voltage and runs at 800 r.p.m. Its field
resistance and armature resistance are 100 Ω and 1 Ω respectively. If an additional resistance
of 20 Ω is inserted in the armature circuit, compute the followings:

• Motor speed and the line current in case load torque varies with the speed

• Motor speed and the line current in case load torque varies as the square of the
speed.
