1 mark questions
1. The output of a stemdown transformer is measured to be 24 V when connected to a 12 watt light bulb.
The value of the peak current is
(a) 1√2 A (b) √2 A (c) 2A (d) 2 √2 A
2. Magnetic flux through a coil changes from 0.7 Wb to 0.2 Wb in 0.1 second. The induced emf developed
in the coil is
(a) 7V (b) 5V (c) 20V (d) 2V

2 marks questions
3. A 60 W load is connected to the secondary of a transformer whose primary draws line voltage. If a
current of 0.54. A flows in the load, what is the current in the primary coil? Comment on the type of
transformer being used.
4. A square loop MNOP of side 20 cm is placed horizontally in a uniform magnetic field acting vertically
downwards as shown in the figure. The loop is pulled with a constant velocity of 20 cms–1 till it goes out
of the field.

(i) Depict the direction of the induced current in the loop as it goes out of the field. For how long
would the current in the loop persist?
(ii) Plot a graph showing the variation of magnetic flux and induced emf as a function of time.

5. A conducting rod PQ of length 20 cm and resistance 0.1 resistance 0.1 rests on two smooth parallel
rails of negligible resistance AA\ and CC\. It can slide on the rails and the arrangement is positioned
between the poles of a permanent magnet producing uniform magnetic field B = 0.4 T. The rails the rod
and the magnetic field are in three mutually perpendicular directions as shown in the figure. If the ends
A and C of the rails are short circuited, find the
(i) external force required to move the rod with uniform velocity v= 10 cm/s, and
(ii) power required to do so.

6. (a) What is induced emf? Write Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. Express it
mathematically.
(b) A conducting rod of length ‘l’ with one end pivoted is roated with a uniform angular speed ‘’ in
a vertical plane, normal to a uniform magnetic field ‘B’. Deduce an expression for the emf
induced in this rod.
If resistance of rod is R, what is the current induced in it?

5 mark question
7. (a) Describe briefly, with the help of a labelled diagram, the working of a step up transformer.
(b) Write any two sources of energy loss in a transformer.
(c) A step up transformer converts a low voltage into high voltage. Does it not violate the principle
of conservation of energy? Explain.
