Equivalent Fractions Explained

Equivalent fractions are fractions that represent the same amount, like 1/2 and 2/4 from a pizza example. To find or check equivalent fractions, you can multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number, or use cross multiplication. Understanding equivalent fractions is important for adding or subtracting fractions with different denominators.

Explaining Equivalent Fractions Like a 5-Year-Old

What Are Equivalent Fractions?

Imagine you have a big pizza 🍕. If you cut it into 2 equal parts and eat 1 part, you ate half of
the pizza:
1/2
Now, if you cut the same pizza into 4 equal parts and eat 2 parts, you still ate the same
amount of pizza:
2/4
Both fractions 1/2 and 2/4 represent the same amount. That’s why they are called
equivalent fractions. They might look different, but they’re the same!

How to Solve Equivalent Fractions:

To find or check if fractions are equivalent, you can multiply or divide the numerator (top
number) and denominator (bottom number) by the same number.

Example 1: Make Fractions Equivalent

Let’s turn 1/2 into an equivalent fraction:
- Multiply both the top and the bottom by 2:
1/2 = (1 × 2) / (2 × 2) = 2/4
Now 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent!

Example 2: Check if Two Fractions Are Equivalent

Are 3/6 and 1/2 equivalent? Let’s check!
- Divide both the top and the bottom of 3/6 by 3:
3/6 = (3 ÷ 3) / (6 ÷ 3) = 1/2
Yes! 3/6 is the same as 1/2.

Fun Trick: Cross Multiply to Check!

You can also use a fun method called cross multiplication to check if fractions are
equivalent. Let’s check if 3/6 and 1/2 are equivalent:
1. Multiply the top of the first fraction by the bottom of the second:
3×2=6
2. Multiply the bottom of the first fraction by the top of the second:
6×1=6
3. If the two answers are the same, the fractions are equivalent!
Since 6 = 6, the fractions are equivalent.

Why Do We Care About Equivalent Fractions?

They help us when adding or subtracting fractions because they make denominators match.
It’s like finding the same size for different puzzle pieces so they fit together!
