Tute Classes Assignment

Fifth Semester - BSc programme with Computer Science

September 12, 2024

Instructions:

• Attempt all questions.

• Show all your work with proper reasoning.

1. Let {x n } and {y n } be convergent sequences, and let c ∈ R. Then prove the following
properties based on Algebra of Limits.

(a) limn→∞ (c · x n ) = c · limn→∞ x n

(b) limn→∞ (x n + y n ) = limn→∞ x n + limn→∞ y n
(c) limn→∞ (x n − y n ) = limn→∞ x n − limn→∞ y n
(d) limn→∞ (x n y n ) = limn→∞ x n · limn→∞ y n
( )
(e) limn→∞ y1n = limn→∞ 1
yn
if limn→∞ y n 6= 0
( )
(f) limn→∞ xy nn = lim n→∞ x n
limn→∞ y n if limn→∞ y n 6= 0
p √
(g) limn→∞ x n = limn→∞ x n if limn→∞ x n ≥ 0

2. Let limn→∞ x n = 5 and limn→∞ y n = 0. Does limn→∞ xy nn exist? Justify your answer.

3. Prove the following statement: If {a n } is a bounded sequence (not necessarily conver-

gent) and {b n } converges to 0, then a n b n → 0.

4. Consider the sequences {a n } = (−1)n and {b n } = n1 . Prove that {a n b n } converges, but

neither {a n } nor {b n } converges. Explain why this does not contradict theorem, which
states that if limn→∞ x n and limn→∞ y n exist, then limn→∞ (x n y n ) = limn→∞ x n ·limn→∞ y n .

5. Prove that if a n → u and b n → v, then max{a n , b n } → max{u, v} and min{a n , b n } →

min{u, v}.

6. For a given sequence {x n }, we define the sequence of arithmetic means {λn } by:
x1 + x2 + · · · + xn
λn =
n
Prove that if x n → L, then λn → L.
Prove that the converse of this result is false by finding a sequence {x n } such that {λn }
converges, but {x n } does not.

9. Let x be any ral number then prove that there exists a sequence {z n } of irrational num-
bers different from x such that z n → x.

10. Prove that If |a| < 1, then lim a n = 0.

11. Prove the followings:

p
(a) For any fixed c > 0, lim n
c = 1.
(b) If {a n } converges and ∀n ∈ N, a n ≥ K , then lim a n ≥ K .

12. Prove that If {a n } and {b n } are convergent sequences such that lim a n < lim b n , then
there exists n 0 ∈ N such that ∀n ≥ n 0 ⇒ a n < b n .

13. Prove that if 0 ≤ a ≤ b, then lim n a n + b n = b.

14. In each of the following, find the limit and use the second squeeze principle to prove
the answer:
2
−5n
(i) limn→∞ 8n4n2 +3n−1 .
2
(ii) limn→∞ 3n n+7n−4
3 −4 .
