Tutorial 1-2

The document outlines a tutorial involving various calculations related to power generation, including demand analysis for different groups, load curves, and efficiency metrics for power stations. It covers topics such as diversity factor, load factor, fuel consumption, and maximum demand for different types of generating stations. The tutorial includes specific scenarios and calculations for a power station, a diesel engine plant, and a generating station with defined parameters.

1. A power station has to meet the following demand:

Group A: 200 kW between 8 A.M. and 6 P.M.
Group B: 100 kW between 6 A.M. and 10 A.M.
Group C: 50 kW between 6 A.M. and 10 A.M.
Group D: 100 kW between 10 A.M. and 6 P.M. and then between 6 P.M. and 6 A.M. Plot
the daily load curve and determine
➢ diversity factor
➢ units generated per day
➢ load factor

2. The annual load duration curve for a typical heavy load being served by a steam station, a
run-of-river station and a reservoir hydro-electric station is as shown in Fig. The ratio of
number of units supplied by these stations is as follows:
Steam: Run-of-river: Reservoir :: 7 : 4: 1

The run-of-river station is capable of generating power continuously and works as a base
load station. The reservoir station works as a peak load station. Determine
i) Maximum demand of each station
ii) Load factor of each station.

3. A 100 MW power station delivers 100 MW for 2 hours, 50 MW for 6 hours and is shut
down for the rest of each day. It is also shut down for maintenance for 45 days each year.
Calculate its annual load factor.

4. A diesel engine power plant has one 700 kW and two 500 kW generating units. The fuel
consumption is 0·28 kg per kWh and the calorific value of fuel oil is 10200 kcal/kg. Plant
capacity factor = 40%. (1kWh=860kcal 1kWh=860kcal )

Estimate:
i) Fuel oil required for a month of 30 days
ii) Overall efficiency.

5. A generating station has a maximum demand of 25MW, a load factor of 60%, a plant
capacity factor of 50% and a plant use factor of 72%. Find
i) Reserve capacity of the plant
ii) Daily energy produced
iii) Maximum energy that could be produced daily if the plant while running as
per schedule, were fully loaded.
