(i) Write down g 1 ( x) .

(ii) Find f ( x) . [4]

Solution

(a) (i) (f g)(x) = 5(3x 2 + 2x) = 15x 2 + 10x ,

(ii) (g f)(x) = 3(5x) 2 + 2(5x) = 75x 2 + 10x

(b) (i) g -1 (x) = 5x ,

(ii) f = (f g) g -1 . Hence, f(x) = 75x 2 + 10x

5. [Maximum mark: 7]

(b) Explain why the function g has no inverse. [1]

(c) Find two solutions of the equation ( g f )( x )  5 . [2]

Solution

(a) (i) (f g)(2) = f(3) = 4 ,

(ii) (g g)(3) = g(5) = 4

(iii) (g f -1 )(4) = g(3) = 5

(b) It is not 1-1 [g(3)= 5 and g(4)=5]

(c) g(f(x)) = 5 , so f(x) = 3 or f(x) = 4

Hence, x = 2 or x = 3
