Sandpaper Letters
Sandpaper Letters
Invitation- you have been playing the sound game, today m going to show you the letters that
you see on the display
Materials
Cursive sandpaper letters – vowels on blue boards, consonants on pink boards, and double
letters on green boards
(ideal to display on an open shelf where children can see them easily, all... If you don’t have
space in the environment, letters can be put stacked in a box)
Aim
Uniting sounds to the appropriate symbol by means of muscular and visual memory
Preparation of the hand for writing
Presentation
1. Invite the child to the area of presentation
2. Let the child bring a chowki and small mat to the area of presentation
3. Along with the child, go to the shelf and introduce to the sandpaper letters
4. Carry three contrasting letters to the area of presentation- ask the child if they would
like to carry the letters or the sensitizing tray to the area of presentation
5. Choose 3 sandpaper letters that are Contrasting in shape and sound, and are a
combination of vowels and consonants (for example a, r, m)
6. Place the letters stacked on one another, facing downwards, on the top right corner
of the chowki
7. Sensitize your finger tips and invite the child to do the same
8. Place the sensitizing tray on the mat next to the chowki
9. Start with the letter ‘a’ (vowel) by picking it from the stack and placing in centre of
the chowki, facing upwards
10. Introduce the first letter to the child and link the sound of the letter with its symbol ,
give a few words to emphasize the sound, for example- this is “a (ae)” as in Apple, as
in Bat. Repeat the sound 2-3 times and let the child repeat
11. Show the child how to trace the letter
12. Hold the letter on the left side from the left hand and use the index and middle finger
of the right hand to trace the letter
13. Repeat the sound of the letter as you trace along the letter
14. Do this 2-3 times
15. Invite the child to trace the letter
16. In the same manner, introduce the other two letters- repeat the same steps with
another two letters – r and m (R as in rain, M as in mother/muppet)
17. Once the child has learnt the sound and traced all three letters, continue giving the
three period lesson to the child, emphasizing the tracing of the letters as much as
possible. Example- show me M, give me R, put A in front of you, Trace M, place A in
corner of the chowki, etc. (do this a couple of times)
18. Once done, invite the child to continue working for as long as he is interested
19. Tell the child, once he is done, he can put back the letters on the shelf and that you
will introduce another letters to the child next time
Always trace the sandpaper letters with the index and middle fingers in the direction that it
is written in.
It is also important to trace the letter in front of you to show the child the correct posture.
Control of error
Texture of sandpaper acts as guide
Age

Game 1A (identifying)
Game 1B (identifying)
1. Invite a group of 3-4 children
2. Remind them to sensitize their fingers
3. Ask the children to fetch a long mat and place it in the area of presentation
4. Ask each child to choose as many sandpaper letters as they want and take them to
the mat
5. Point to a sound and ask the child to identify and trace it
6. Give each child a turn and continue for as long as the children are interested
Game 2 (Giving words)
Illustration (draw the letters- don’t centre the letter- move the letter to the right as in the
original sandpaper letters ; vowels will be blue background, consonants will be on pink
background- height of letters will be same, but the board of the letter will change eg. M is
on a bigger board horizontally, f is a long word so follow accordingly)- try to put different
example than of a, r and m as mam took this in presentation- can trace the letters from
the movable letters tray and make it hand drawn- take it exactly as in the original boards-
see pic in phone)
