1. A population of a small town grows proportional to its current population.

The initial population is 5000 and grows 4 % per year. This can be modeled
by:
dP
= 0.4P
dt
where P (0) = 5000.

(a) Find an equation to model the population.

(b) Determine the population after 3 years.
(c) Determine how long it will take the popilation to double.

2. A certain radioactive material decays at a rate propostional proportional to

the amount present. At time t = 0, there are 50 milligrams. After two years
20 % has decayed:

(a) Find an equation to model this decay.

(b) How much is left after 5 years.
(c) What is the half life of this material.

3. (a) Explain the Geometrical interpretation of derivative.

(b) Population of bacteria grows at a rate proportional to the current popu-
lation. If the population doubles in 4 hours, and the initial population is 100,
find the population after 10 hours.
(c) A population of bacteria is growing in a petri dish. The rate of growth
is proportional to the current population. If the initial population is 200
bacteria and the population doubles in 3 hours, what is the population after
5 hours?
4. A bacteria culture has a constant relative growth rate of 0.672 cells per day.
At the begining there are 8 cells.
(a) Find an equation to model this growth.
(b) Find the population size after 10 years.
(c) When will there be 100000 cells?
5. Radium decomposes in air at the rate proportional to the present amount.
if initially there are 20 grams, and after 10 years, 0.6 percent of the original
amount decomposed:
(a) Set a model that will predict the amount of radium at any time:
(b) What is the half-life of the radium?
(c) What is the amount remaining in 900 years?
6. Radium decomposes in air at the rate proportional to the amount present. It
is found out that in 25 years, 1.1 percent of a amount decomposed. Determine
approximately how long will it take:
(a) For one-half of the original amount decompose?
(b) 20 % of the amount to decompose?
(c) What percent of the amount will decompose in 50 years?
7. (a) Explain degree and order of the differential equation.
(b) A load of mass 10 kg is dropped from the top of a building that is 313.6
m high. Find the the time and speed when it reaches the ground.
(c) A body whose temperature is initially 100◦ C is allowed to cool in air,
whose temperature remains at a constant temperature 20◦ C. It is given that
after 10 minutes, the body has cooled to 40◦ C. Find the temperature of the
body after half an hour.
8. (a) Explain the geometrical meaning of first order differential equation.
(b) A thermometer reads 80◦ C in a room that is 25◦ C. After 15 minutes,
the thermometer reads 40◦ C. How long will it take for the thermometer to
reach a temperature of 30◦ C?
(c) A cup of coffee is initially at a temperature of 90◦ C. The room temperature
is 20◦ C. After 10 minutes, the coffee temperature is measured at 70◦ C. What
is the cooling constant k for this scenario?
9. (a) A certain population of rabbits grows at a rate proportional to the current
population. If the population doubles in 5 years, what will be the population
after 10 years if the initial population is 100 rabbits?

2
(b) A cup of coffee is initially at a temperature of 90◦ C in a room at a
constant temperature of 20◦ C. If the coffee cools to 70◦ C in 10 minutes,
what will be the temperature of the coffee after 20 minutes?
(c) A population of bacteria grows according to the model:
dP
+ 0.2P = 10,
dt
P (t) is the population at time t. Find the population P (t) given the initial
condition P (0) = 5.
10. A hot object is placed in a room with a constant ambient temperature of 25◦ C.
According to Newton’s Law of Cooling, the rate of change of the temperature
T (t) of the object at any time t is proportional to the difference between the
object’s temperature and the ambient temperature. This is modeled by the
differential equation:
dT
= −k(T − Tambient ), where k is a positive constant and Tambient = 25◦ C
dt
(a) State Newton’s Law of Cooling in words. What does the constant k
represent in the context of this equation?
dT
(b) Solve the differential equation dt = −k(T − 25) to find the general solu-
tion for T (t).
(c) An object with an initial temperature of 100◦ C is left to cool in a room
at 25◦ C. After 10 minutes, the object’s temperature is 70◦ C. Find the
value of the constant k. Using this value, determine the temperature of
the object after 30 minutes and sketch the cooling curve T (t).
