Problem-Set-1
1 BASIC THERMODYNAMICS

b. The gage pressure at the bottom of the tank
c. The force exerted by the fluids at the bottom when the diameter of
the tank is 1.3m
2. A 1𝑚3 container is filled with 0.12 𝑚3 of granite, 0.15𝑚3 of sand, and 0.2𝑚3
of 25℃ waters, the rest of the volume is air with density o 1.15 kg/m3. Find
the overall specific volume and density.
3. A mercury manometer located in a room at 25℃ has a height of 750mm. What is
the atmospheric pressure in kPa?
4. A car of mass 1775 𝑘g travels with a velocity of 100 𝑘𝑚/ℎ𝑟. Find the kinetic
energy. How high should the car be lifted in the standard gravitational field
to have a potential energy that equals the kinetic energy?
5. A tank has two rooms separated by a membrane. Room A has 1kg of air and a
3 3 3
volume of 0.5 m , Room B has 0.75 m of air with density 0.8 𝑘𝑔/𝑚 . The
membrane is broken and the air comes to a uniform state. Find the final
density of the air.

located in a mountainous region which is 350 m above a valley floor. What is
the potential energy stored in the lake of water?
7. A crane is used to lift a load of bricks to the top of a new office building.
Calculate the work done if the load of bricks weighs 1600 N and the building
is 50 m tall. Compare the work done with the potential energy of the bricks
when at the top of the building.
8. What pressure in column of water 100 cm high equivalent to?
9. A pressure gauge registers 50 psig in a region where the barometer is 14.25
psia. Find the absolute pressure in psia?
10. Water enters a heater at 25 ℃ and leaves at 80 ℃. What is the temperature
change in Fº?
11. A balloon having a mass of 400 kg remains suspended motionless in the air. If
the air density is 1.29 kg/m3, what is the volume of the balloon in cubic
meters?
12. What is the specific gravity of a solid sphere that has a radius of 15 mm and
a mass of 0.038 kg?
13. A hydraulic lift is to be used to lift a truck weighing 5000 lb. What is the
pressure (gauge) must be applied to the oil if the diameter of the large
piston is 12 in?
14. Three kilograms of dry hydrogen occupy 33 m3. What is the density of the
hydrogen?
15. Two liquids of different densities (ρ1 = 1500 kg/m3, ρ2 = 500 kg/m3) are
poured together into a 100-liter tank, filling it. If the resulting density of
the mixture is 800 kg/m3, find the respective quantities of liquids used. Also,
find the weight of the mixture; local g = 9.675 m/s2.
