SUB-
DISCIPLINES/
BRANCHES
07

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
it treats chemical, biological, and thermal waste; it concentrates
on e.g. water purification, waste water and solid waste treatment,
air pollution, hazardous waste management.

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
NOITATNEIRO GNIREENIGINE LIVIC

this branch is based on the knowledge from geology, material

science, mechanics, and hydraulics; it focuses on economical
foundations, retaining walls as well as similar structures designs.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
it provides structural design and structural analysis of buildings.
it identifies the kind of loads acting on structures and it takes into
account the strength, stiffness, and stability of the structures.

MUNICIPAL ENGINEERING
this branch of civil engineering deals with municipal
infrastructure; it designs, constructs, and maintains pavements,
water supply networks, sewers, street lighting, municipal solid
waste management, public parks, bicycle paths.
08

WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

it concerns the collection and management of water; the branch
is connected with hydrology, environmental science,
meteorology, geology, resource management.

MATERIAL ENGINEERING
NOITATNEIRO GNIREENIGINE LIVIC

this branch deals with various kinds of material, such as concrete,

mix asphalt concrete metals; its attention is drawn to the
increasing strength of aluminum, steel, polymers and carbon
fibers.

COASTAL ENGINEERING
the main task of this branch is to manage the coastal areas; it also
tackles with the flooding defense and erosion.

CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING
the primary role of a construction engineer is to manage and
oversee an entire construction project. their daily tasks are likely
to involve evaluating logistical operations, reviewing contracts,
and coordinating contractors.
09

SURVEYING
NOITATNEIRO GNIREENIGINE LIVIC

measuring a certain dimension which occur on the Earth surface;

land surveying is used for a boundary establishing and for making
subdivision plans; construction surveying includes existing
condition survey, verifying the structure location during
construction and survey at the end.

HYDRAULIC ENGINEERING
studies the effect of water and will provide expertise and
guidance on projects related to water supply, drainage system,
and flooding.

A MULTI-
DICIPLINARY
FIELD
11

When constructing a highway interchange, a Structural Engineer

makes it stable and designs the structure itself. But the Transportation
Engineer determines how many lanes are needed on traffic and how
merging should happen to maximize traffic flow and safety rather than
the physics of the structure. After constructing the highway
interchange, a safe engineer inspect to avoid such hazards as sharp
turns and blind intersections, known to result in traffic accidents.
(Stars,2017)

Environmental Engineers are called upon to play an important role in

environmental protection because engineering solutions are required
to meet the environmental standards set by legislation. Civil Engineers
are particularly involved in such activities as water supply and
sewerage, management of surface water and groundwater quality,
remediation of contaminated sites, and solid waste management.

CIVIL
ENGINEERING
AND SOCIETY
From the inside of our homes to massive
skyscrapers and from small public parks
to national space programs, civil
engineers work to create the built
environment while also sharping the
natural environment. Integrating both
the hard sciences and esthetics, civil
engineers work at the leading edge of
engineering to make our lives more
efficient, more convenient, and more
enjoyable.

CIVIL
ENGINEERING
AND SOCIETY:
CONTRIBUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Developing better water supplies, municipal sewer systems, waste

treatment plants
Designing buildings to protect us from natural hazards and provide
health care.
Improving agriculture through water resource development.
Distribution of projects to rapid and dramatic changes in the
transportation system.

> Civil Engineers have developed the basic infrastructure on which modern
society depends. They were the first engineers and continue
to be dedicated to technology development for the common good and the
public. CIVIL ENIGINEERING ORIENTATION
14

How can an Engineer help a Society?

BY LOWERING THE COST OF CONSTRUCTION WORK.

BY MAINTAINING THE SAFETY OF WORKERS AS A SITE.
BY FASTER CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROJECT.
BY INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY.
BY MAINTAINING THE QUALITY OF THE WORK.

CIVIL
ENGINEERING
AND SOCIETY:
ROLE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING IN THE SOCIETY
"A Civil Engineer is responsible for analyzing different factors regarding a
construction project"

Explanation: A Civil Engineer has to follow a construction project from

beginning to end and make necessary changes along the way to
completion. They are responsible for checking whether the safety
features of the project are maintained or not and must ensure that all
the processes are followed.

CIVIL ENIGINEERING ORIENTATION

16

A Civil Engineer also needs to use different figures, equations, and

applications to ensure that the processes are been implemented
accurately. They need to conduct a number of functions such as

NOITATNEIRO GNIREENIGINE LIVIC

conducting chemical testing using various applications, use drafting and
design software throughout the project, and conducting electrical testing
of devices equipment.

JOB ROLES

The two crucial aspects within this field are

consulting engineering and constructing
engineering.
Consulting Engineers - design a specific
project.
Contracting Engineers - manage the
physical construction and play a significant
role in transforming the proposed
development into architecture.
18
THE KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
OF THE CIVIL ENGINEER ARE AS LISTED
BELOW:

The first, and most important, responsibility is to

analyze the site location and the surrounding
area. This includes a search and investigation,

NOITATNEIRO GNIREENIGINE LIVIC

verifying its feasibility for construction purposes

The second is to design a plan, outlining the key

variables and what needs to be changed prior to
the construction.

The third role is to develop a detailed design

layout, keeping the requirements of the client in
mind. The design and any subsequent reports
need to be reviewed and approved, and potential
risks and challenges of the project identified.

PROS AND CONS OF BEING A
CIVIL ENGINEERING IN THE
SOCIETY.
20

PROS

Civil Engineers are professionals that are educated and

trained to build infrastructures and projects that ensure
the safety and development of society.
NOITATNEIRO GNIREENIGINE LIVIC

Civil Engineers develop our society, they design and

build an infrastructure that ensures high rigidity and
enhances the life of people e.g. schools, malls, bridges,
and drainage systems.

CONS
As our society develops, multiple infrastructures were
built from left to right that sometimes causes harm or
even destroys our natural environment.

CIVIL ENGINEERS AND

ARCHITECS

Civil Engineers work on a variety of different

projects that include planning, building, and
maintaining roads, buildings, bridges, and water
systems, while Architects work primarily with
houses, and factories.
Civil Engineers and Architects do, however, work
together on some projects. They both visit
construction sites to ensure work is being
completed correctly and in the given time frame.
Civil Engineers and Architects both estimate costs
and create plans based on the projected budget.
While Civil Engineers decide on the materials used
to ensure a safe and rigid structure, Architects
highlight the design aspect of the project CIVIL ENIGINEERING ORIENTATION
23

CIVIL ENGINEERS AND

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS

Engineers design ways to fox problems. In their

designs, they must consider factors such as cost,
efficiency, safety other parameters defined by
project specification. Civil Engineers work on
projects that involve infrastructures such as roads
bridges, and water supply, and sewage treatment.
While Electrical Engineers work on projects that
involve electrical components, such as wireless
communication devices and navigation systems.
Regardless of the type of the project or type of
engineer, strong analytical skills are required to be
successful.
