Elements of Design

Interior Design
WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF INTERIOR
DESIGN ?
• The elements of design are the fundamental aspects of
any visual design which include shape, color, space,
form, line, value, and texture.
IMPORTANCE OF ELEMENTS IN INTERIOR
DESIGN
The elements of design create every object around us.
Nothing can exist without these ingredients. The discipline
of learning the power of these elements and formatting
them within the principles of design is the responsibility of
the designer.
Point
• Point is the first and simplest element of visual design.
Point serves as the focus of something visual, and
therefore draws attention. Even if there is only one point,
or one mark, on a blank page our brains will make it mean
something
Line

• A line can be vertical, diagonal, horizontal, and even

curved. It can be any width, size, shape, position,
direction, interval, or density. Points create lines and lines
create shapes. A line can have other elements like color,
texture, and movement applied to it
Horizontal Line
• Restful
• Relaxing
• informal
Diagonal Line
• Active
• Suggests movement
Vertical Line

• Lends dignity and formality

• Creates feelings of aspiration.
Curved Line

• Upward – lifts and inspires

• Horizontal – relaxed, denotes gentleness and femininity
• Downward – sadness and seriousness
• Small - playful
Shape
• A shape is a two- or three-dimensional object that stands
out from the space next to it because of a defined or
implied boundary. A shape can live in different areas in
space, and have other elements like line, color, texture, or
movement.

Form
• Forms are three dimensional, and there are two
types: geometric (man-made) and natural (organic). A
digital or physical form can be measured by height, width,
and depth. A form can be created by combining shapes,
and it can be enhanced by color or texture.
Texture
• Texture is an element of design that defines the
surfaces of shapes and forms. Texture that you feel
with your fingers is called tactile while texture that the
artist recreates on a flat surface is called visual
texture. Tactile texture is three-dimensional because it
has height, width and depth
• The surface quality of an object or item
• Tactile
– How the object feels to the touch
– Can feel the variation in the surface
• Visual
– An illusion - how the object appears to feel
– Applied using line, color, & shading
Color
• Color is often deemed to be an important element of
design as it is a universal language which presents the
countless possibilities of visual communication. Hue,
saturation, and brightness are the three characteristics
that describe color. Hue can simply be referred to as
"color" as in red, yellow, or green.
Value
• Value has the most emotive and expressive potentiality of
all the elements. Simply defined, value is the gradation
from light to dark across a form; it is determined both by
the lightness and darkness of the object and by its natural
color- its local color - and by the degree of light that strikes
it.
Space
• Space refers to the area that a shape or form occupies. It
also refers to the background against which we see the
shape or form. Space can be defined as positive and
negative.
• The three dimensional expanse that a designer is working
with
