INTRODUCTION TO GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING (CVEN4423)

Assignment #1
(Due date: 30th September 2024)

Exercise #1:
A soil sample has a void ratio of 0.65, moisture content = 10% and Gs=2.60. Determine
the following:

a) Dry unit weight, moist unit weight (KN/m3).


b) Weight of water in KN/m3 to be added for 80% degree of saturation.
c) Is it possible to reach a water content of 30% without change the present void ratio.

Exercise #2:
An undisturbed sample of clayey soil is found to have a wet weight of 300 N, a dry
weight of 265 N, and a total volume of 15x103 cm3 if the specific gravity of soil solids is
2.72, determine:
a) The water content,
b) The void ratio, and
The degree of saturation.

Exercise #3:

- Moist soil volume = 10 x 10-3 m3,


- Weight = 165 x 10-3 kN,
- Oven-dry weight of the soil = 140 x 10-3 kN, and
- Gs=2.7.

Calculate:

(a) The moisture content


(b) Moist unit weight
(c) Dry unit weight
(d) Void ratio

(e) Porosity
(f) Degree of saturation

Exercise #4

A 130.5 g sample of soil was obtained from a split barrel sampler and its volume was
found to be 63.4 cm3. The sample was then oven dried to a constant mass of 107.5 g. If
a specific gravity test determined that the soil has a specific gravity of solids of 2.65.

Find
(a) The water content,
(b) Moist density and dry density (kg/m3),
(c) Void ratio and porosity,
(d) Saturation rate and percent air content.

Exercise #5
Classify the soils 4, 9 and 12 grouped in the following Table using the Unified Soil
Classification System. Give the group symbol and the group name.
