Exercise 3. The Most Common Idioms (2 points each)


Determine whether the underlined idiom in each sentence is correct or not. On the blank
before each number, put a checkmark if it is correct and write the correct idiom if it is not
you can refer to the table for reference.

Exercise 4. Write your own sentences to express your ideas and experiences
using the following idioms: (5 points each)
1. Losing my job turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it pushed me to pursue
my true passion
2. In this crowded market, talented singers are a dime a dozen.
3. Instead of directly addressing the issue, he preferred to beat around the bush,
making the conversation frustrating.
4. Working remotely allows me to have the best of both worlds: spending time with
family and advancing my career.
5. Before going on stage, the nervous actor was told, “Break a leg!” for good luck.
6. After a long day of work, it’s time to call it a day and relax at home.
7. He’s going through a tough time, so let’s cut him some slack and not be too hard on
him.
8. The company’s decision to cut corners on safety measures resulted in a major

Exercise 5. Following the link in your Required Readings and Learning Materials,
Choose 5 idioms from Common Idioms and Expressions and 5 idioms from
Familiar English Idioms and Proverbs. Construct your own sentence using your
chose idioms or proverbs. (You will get 5 points correct each correct sentence)
Sentences using Common Idioms and Expressions
1. She felt like her colleague was stealing her thunder when he presented her idea
as his own during the meeting. (stealing someone’s thunder)
2. Despite their differing opinions, they managed to see eye to eye on the project’s
direction. (see eye to eye)

4. Adding insult to injury, not only did she lose her job, but her car broke down on
