VIRTUAL SYSTEMS &

SERVICES
LECTURE 1 BY MUHAMMAD ZEESHAN ALI

1
VIRTUALIZATION
TECHNOLOGY: A
POWERFUL TOOL FOR
MODERN COMPUTING

2
WHAT IS VIRTUALIZATION?

Virtualization is a technique that creates a virtual

version of a computer resource.

This virtual resource can be a server, storage device,

network, or even an entire desktop environment.

Virtualization software acts as an abstraction layer,

separating the physical hardware from the virtual
resources.
3
TYPES OF VIRTUALIZATION

4
Server virtualization: Creates
multiple virtual servers on a single
physical server.

Desktop virtualization: Provides

TYPES users with virtual desktops that
can be accessed from any device.

Storage virtualization: Pools

physical storage devices into a
single virtual storage pool.
5
BENEFITS OF
VIRTUALIZATION

6
Cost Reduction: Reduce hardware costs
by consolidating multiple servers onto
fewer physical machines.

Increased Efficiency: Improve resource

utilization and reduce server downtime.
BENEFITS
Improved Scalability: Easily scale
resources up or down to meet changing
demands.

Enhanced Security: Isolate virtual

machines from each other, improving
security posture.
7
APPLICATIONS OF
VIRTUALIZATION

8
Data Centers: Virtualization is the backbone of
modern data centers, enabling consolidation
and efficient resource allocation.

Cloud Computing: Cloud providers rely on

virtualization to deliver on-demand computing
resources.
APPLICATIONS
Disaster Recovery: Virtual machines can be
easily backed up and restored, facilitating faster
disaster recovery.

Software Development: Virtual environments

provide isolated testing grounds for developers.

9
TRADITIONAL VS VIRTUAL
SYSTEMS

10
Dedicated Hardware: Each application or
service runs on its own dedicated server.

Inflexible: Scaling requires adding more physical

servers.

TRADITIONAL Resource Underutilization: Servers often run at

SYSTEM low capacity.

Higher Costs: Hardware, maintenance, and

power expenses add up.

Isolation: Limited isolation between

applications.

11
Shared Resources: VMs share hardware
resources.

Agility: Easily scale by creating more VMs.

VIRTUAL SYSTEM Efficiency: Better utilization of hardware.

Cost Savings: Fewer physical servers, reduced

expenses.

Isolation: VMs are isolated, enhancing security.
