Operation searchlight

Operation Searchlight was a military action by the Pakistani Army on March 25,
1971, in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). It aimed to stop the growing demand for
independence led by the Awami League, a political party that had won the 1970
elections but faced resistance from Pakistan’s rulers in West Pakistan.

The operation started with a violent attack in Dhaka, especially targeting students,
political leaders, and ordinary people. Soldiers attacked places like Dhaka
University, killing thousands and destroying buildings. The goal was to weaken the
Awami League and take control of East Pakistan.

Instead of stopping the independence movement, Operation Searchlight made

people even angrier. Many Bengalis joined the Mukti Bahini, a group of freedom
fighters. The brutality of the operation shocked the world. Reports of mass killings,
destruction, and abuse drew international attention, and many countries criticized
Pakistan’s actions.

This event led to the Bangladesh Liberation War, which ended with Bangladesh
becoming an independent country on December 16, 1971. Operation Searchlight
is remembered as a tragic and brutal part of history.
