1. P(A) = 0.8, P(B) = 0.6 and P(A∩B) = 0.5, Find (i) P(A U B) (ii) P(A/B) (iii) P(A/B1)
2. A man is known to speak the truth 3 out of 4 times. He throws a die and reports that it is a
six. Find the probability that it is a six.
3. A speaks truth 75% of cases, B speaks truth 80% of cases. In what percentage of cases are
they likely to contradict each other? (Assure that when both of them lie, the “lies’ will match)
4. Two unbiased dice A & B are thrown. What is the probability the (i) the score on A exceeds
score on B? (ii) the score on any one of them exceeds the score on another?
5. In a class of 45 students, 25 students failed Maths, 20 students failed Physics, and 10
students failed both subjects. A student is selected at random. (a) If he failed Physics, find
the probability that he failed in Maths. (b) If he failed Maths, find the probability that he failed
in Physics. (c) Find the probability that he failed in Maths or Physics, but not both.
6. The chance of defective screw’s in three boxes A, B, C is 1/5, 1/6, 1/7 respectively. A box is
selected at random and a screw drawn from at random is found to be defective then the
probability that it came from box A is?
7. Box B1 contains 6 red & 4 blue balls, B2 contains 8 Red &7 Blue balls One box is selected
at random and 1 ball is drawn out of that box. This ball is kept in the other box. Now, one
ball is drawn at random from the other box. What is the probability that it is (i) red? (ii) blue?
8. An Urn contains 5 white and 8 black balls. Two successive drawings of three balls at a time
are made such that the balls are not replaced before the second draw. Find the probability
that the first draw gives 3 white balls and the second draw gives 3black balls.
9. There are two groups of subjects one of which consists of 5 science kinds of subject and 3
English subjects and the other consists of 3 science subject and 5 English subjects. An
unbiased die is cast. If number 2 or number 4 turns up, a subject is selected at random first
group otherwise from the second group. Find the probability that an English subject is chosen
from the first group.
10. A college faculty has 5 teachers of Math and 4 teachers of Computer science in the CSE
department, and 4 teachers of Math and 5 teachers of Computer science in Maths
department. If the director of that college transfers one teacher at random from CSE to Maths.
What is the probability of selecting a teacher from Maths will be of first?
11. In a firm 40% of work force are female, 25% of female work force are in Management grade
while 30% of male work force is in management grade. If a Management grade worker is
taken at random, what is the probability that the worker will be (i) female? (ii) male?
12. Two computers A and B are to be marketed. A salesman assigned the job of finding
customers for them has 60% and 40% chances respectively of succeeding in the case of
computer A and B. The two computers can be sold independently. Given that he was able
to sell at least one computer, what is the probability that computer A has been sold?
13. In a television programme, a game is played. A person who has been given Rs.100 plays
under the following rules. At each toss of a fair coin, he bets Rs 100 on either tail or head
with equal return if he wins. The game will be ended if
(1) he has no money left,
(2) the coin has been tossed five times.
If he wins five times, an extra of Rs. 2000 will be given.
(a)Find the probability that the game will be ended at the 3rd toss.
(b) Find the probability that he can win five times. Calculate the amount of money he
will get in this case.
(c) Find the probability that he has at least lost one time in the game.
14. A language class has only 3 students A, B, and C and they independently attend the class.
The probabilities of the attendance of A, B, and C on a given day are 1/2, 1/3, and 3/4
respectively. Find the probability that the total number of attendances in 2 consecutive days
is exactly 3.
15. Three diseases, A, B, and C are mutually exclusive--they cannot occur together. Disease A
afflicts one percent of the population, B afflicts one-half of one percent of the population, and
C afflicts two percent of the population. Sometimes a disease can be present without the
victim having any symptoms. 10% of the A victims have no symptoms, 5% of the B victims
have no symptoms, and 25% of the C victims have no symptoms. Symptoms are present
only when disease A, B, or C is present.
If a person has symptoms, what are the probabilities that he/she has disease A? B? C?
If a person has no symptoms, what are the probabilities that he/she has disease A? B? C?
16. In a random sample of University students 50% indicated they are business majors, 40%
engineering majors, and 10% other majors. Of the business majors, 60% were female;
whereas, 30% of engineering majors were females. Finally, 20% of the other majors were
female. Given that a person is female, what is the probability that she is an engineering
major?
17. A candidate has to reach the examination centre on time. Probabilities of him going by bus
or scooter or by any other means of transport are 3/10, 1/10, and 3/5. The probability that
he will be late is 1/4 and 1/3 respectively if he travels by bus or scooter. But he reaches on
time if he uses any other means of transport. He reached late at the centre. Find the
probability that he travelled by bus.
18. In a certain college 25% of boys and 10% of girls are studying Mathematics. The girls
constitute 60% of the students. If a student is selected at random and is found to be studying
Mathematics, find the probability that the student is a (i) girl (ii) boy
19. Suppose you're on a game show and you're given the choice of three doors. Behind one door
is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say number 1, and the host, who knows
what's behind the doors, opens another door, say number 3, which has a goat. He then says
to you, "Do you want to switch to door number 2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your
choice?
What is the probability of winning the car if you stick with door number 1?
What is the probability of winning the car if you switch to door number 2?
20. Two dice are thrown. Find the probability that the sum of two dies is 10 given that the first die
shows 6.
21. When a pair of fair dice are thrown. Let A be the event that one appears on die 1 and let B be
the event that one appears on die 2 and let C be the event that the sum of the numbers that
appeared on both dice is odd then show that A and C are independent.
22. A box contains three coins; one coin is fair, one coin is two-headed, and one coin is
weighted so that the probability of heads appearing is 1/3. A coin is selected at random and
tossed. Find the probability p that heads appear.
23. The odds in favor of A winning a game of chess against B are 3:2. If 3 games are to be
played, what are the odds (a) in favor of A winning at least 2 games out of the 3, (b) against
A losing the first 2 games to B?
24. Three students are selected at random. What is the probability that (i) all were born on
Friday, (ii) None was born on Monday, (iii) Two of them were born on Friday & one in
Monday?
25. The probability that a newly constricted bridge will collapse is 0.4. The probability that it will
collapse, given design is faulty is 0.85. The chances of design faulty are 8%. The bridge
collapsed and the damage was Rs. 5,00,00,000. What amount can be claimed from the
agency responsible for faulty design?
