DHYAN CHAND
The Indian field hockey player was known as the greatest in the history
of the sport. He was the star of the Indian hockey team that dominated in
the years before World War II. He got India three consecutive gold
medals at the Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936. Because of his control
and mastery over the game, he earned the titles ‘Hockey Wizard’ and
‘The Magician’.

PV SINDHU
The badminton player from Hyderabad, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has
made the country proud on multiple occasions. The first Indian to
become a Badminton World Champion and the second individual athlete
from India to win two consecutive medals at Olympic Games, Sindhu
held a world ranking of number two in April. She represented India in
the 2016 Olympics in Rio and became the first Indian badminton player
to reach a final. In the 2020 Summer Olympics at Tokyo, she won
bronze, becoming the only Indian woman to win two Olympic medals

KARNAM MALLESWARI
Indian weightlifter Karnam Malleswari from Andhra Pradesh was the first
Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics. In the Sydney 2000
Olympics, she won a bronze for lifting 110 kg and 130 kg in the ‘snatch’
and ‘clean jerk’ categories. She was also named ‘The Iron Lady’ after her
win. She has been honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and
the civilian Padma Shri Award.

NORMAN PRITCHARD
British-Indian athlete and actor Norman Pritchard was the first Asia-born
athlete to win an Olympic medal, representing India at the 1900 Paris
Olympics. According to Olympic historians, he was chosen to represent
Great Britain. However, according to the IOC, he represented India and
the Committee credits his two silver medals to India. He was born in
British-occupied India in Calcutta. Between 1990 and 1902, he served as
the secretary of the Indian Football Association.

Mirabai Chanu
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who hails from Manipur, won a
silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics at Tokyo. Previously,
she won at the Commonwealth Games and the World
Championships. For her contribution to sports, she has been
awarded the Padma Shri and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. This
year, she was not only the only Indian woman weightlifter to qualify
for the Olympics, but also the first Indian weightlifter to win silver
at the Olympics and the second Indian weightlifter to win an
Olympic medal.

Sushil Kumar
Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar held the distinction of being the
country’s only two-time Olympic medallist in an individual event
till the Olympics this year. He became the first Indian to win a
wrestling world championship. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he
won bronze in the 66 kg category. Later at the London 2012
Olympics, he won a silver medal. However, his name was tainted
recently when he was arrested in connection with a murder case of
another wrestler and has been in jail since.

Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav


The Indian wrestler, also known as KD Jadhav, won a bronze at the
1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki and with it became the first
athlete of independent India to win at the Olympics. After Norman
Pritchard (who won during the British Raj), he was the first Indian
to win. Before him, India had won in field hockey. Born in
Maharashtra to a wrestler named Dadasaheb Jadhav, who trained
him, he was also a part of the Quit India Movement and came from
a family of wrestlers.

Women’s hockey team
The Indian women’s hockey team, comprising Rani Rampal, Neha
Goyal, Nikki Pradhan, Sushila Chanu, Savita Punia, Navjot Kaur,
Sharmila Devi and others, created history at the 2020 Summer
Olympics at Tokyo. On the 10th day of the Olympics, for the first
time, the team qualified for the semi-finals, beating three-time
champion Australia. The women’s team had qualified in 1980 for
Olympics for the first time.

Abhinav Bindra
Retired sport shooter and businessman Abhinav Bindra, who hails
from Dehradun, is India’s only Olympic gold medallist. At the 2008
Summer Olympics in Beijing, he secured a gold medal in the 10 m
air rifle event.

India won its first ice hockey world championship in 1975. An


under-represented Aslam Shah Khan saved India’s thorns in the
semi-final against heavily backed Malaysia

1983 Cricket World Cup Winner-
After independence, cricket became more popular in India, but
India’s pinnacle of the sport came in 1983, when the men’s team
won the World Cup at Lord’s He Cricket Ground in London,
England. This world title marked the beginning of the cricket
revolution in India, and enthusiasm for the game skyrocketed. This
demonstrated India’s prestige in cricket as a sport.

Bachendri Pal
Indian mountaineer
Bachendri Pal (born May 24, 1954, Nakuri, India) is an Indian
mountaineer who in 1984 became the first Indian woman to reach
the summit of Mount Everest.
The Celebrated Indian mountaineer was given the country's second-
highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan in 2019

Premlata Aggarwal
The first Indian woman to conquer seven Summits of the world
54-year-old Premlata Agrawal, a homemaker who became the first
Indian woman to have achieved the record of climbing the Seven
Summits at the age of 50 and the oldest Indian woman mountaineer
to scale the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest, in 2011.

Kaamya Karthikeyan
Sixteen-year-old Kaamya Karthikeyan became India’s youngest and
world’s second youngest to scale Mount Everest from the Nepal
side.

TENNIS
The four Grand Slams - the Australian Open, French Open,
Wimbledon and the US Open - hold unparalleled significance with
each tournament possessing different traditions and aura.
So far, Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna, Leander Paes and Mahesh
Bhupati, are the only four Indian tennis players to have won a
Grand Slam in their careers.

With 18 Grand Slam titles, Leander Paes is India’s most successful


tennis player and is regarded as one of the best doubles players of
all time.

Mahesh Bhupati was the first Indian to win a Grand Slam while
Sania Mirza is the only Indian woman to win a Grand Slam.

Leander Paes - 18 Grand Slam wins
Paes won the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta
to become India’s first, and so far, the only medallist in tennis at the
Summer Gam.He shares the record for the most mixed doubles
Grand Slam titles in the Open Era with his former partner Martina
Navratilova.Paes was ranked the No. 1 doubles tennis player in the
world in 1999.

Mahesh Bhupathi - 12 Grand Slam wins


Bhupathi is the first Indian tennis player to win a Grand Slam. He
bagged the 1997 French Open mixed doubles title with Japan’s Rika

Sania Mirza - six Grand Slam wins
Sania is the only Indian woman to have ever won a Grand Slam

Amit Panghal
Amit Panghal was born on October 16, 1995, in the village of
Mayna in Rohtak, Haryana.The diminutive boxer won gold in his
maiden nationals in 2017 and two years later became the first Indian
male boxer to win a World Championships silver medal.Amit
Panghal, a former world No. 1, has also represented India at Tokyo

Shiva Thapa
Born on December 8, 1993, Shiva Thapa.Shiva Thapa became the
youngest Indian boxer to compete at the Olympics when he took the
ring at London 2012 as an 18-year-old.
The first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal was Vijender Singh
- who won bronze in the men’s middleweight (75kg) category at the
2008 Beijing Olympics.

The first Indian boxers to win Asian Games medals were Sundar
Rao, who won bronze in the men’s lightweight (60kg) division, and
Hari Singh, who won silver in the men’s middleweight (75kg)
category. Both medals came at the 1958 Asian Games

Saina Nehwal
Saina Nehwal was the player who changed the landscape of Indian
badminton with a monumental bronze at the London 2012 Olympics

Saina Nehwal became the first Indian to win a BWF Super Series
title in 2009 and in 2010, she went on to win gold at the
Commonwealth Games.

Major Dhyan Chand
Major Dhyan Chand, an Indian field hockey player who played
from 29 August 1905 to 3 December 1979, is recognized as one of
the sport’s all-time greats.

Dhyan Chand is still regarded as a legend in both Indian and


international hockey. In India, Chand’s birthday, on August 29, is
recognized as National Sports Day. On this day at the Rashtrapati
Bhavan in India, the President presents sports-related honors such
as the Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, and

Known as the Payyoli Express, PT Usha has won over a hundred
international medals. The national record of 55.42s set by her at LA
1984 was only matched 39 years later by Vithya Ramraj at the
Asian Games 2023.PT Usha made her Olympic debut at the
Moscow 1980 Games and became India’s youngest Olympic
sprinter at 16.In 2022, PT Usha was elected as the first woman
president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Anju Bobby George

Manu Bhaker, born on February 18, 2002, in Jhajjar, Haryana, is

The Summer Olympic Games 2024 branded as the Paris Olympics
2024, is an international multi-sport event that occurred from 24
July to 11 August 2024 in France. Paris was the host city of these
games. The official motto of the olympics is- Games Wide Open.

The Paris Olympics 2024 mascot ‘Phryges’ embodies the spirit of


revolution and freedom, serving as a reminder of France’s rich
history.

Aryabhata – India’s first satellite
India’s contribution to the science of space is immense. The Indian
Space Research Organization (ISRO) was established in 1969 to
serve as India’s national space agency. The first-ever Indian satellite
was the ‘Aryabhata’, which was designed and manufactured in
India and was launched on 19th April 1975. ISRO developed
Aryabhata to execute X-ray astronomy, aeronomy and solar physics.

AGNI – India’s strategic missile


India successfully developed strategic missile systems in the 1980s,
with successful testing of Agni in 1989. Eventually Indian scientists
were able to demonstrate abilities such as re-entry, maneuvering
range, control, guidance, two-stage propulsion and stage separation.
Since then, India has created, tested, operationalized several missile
systems. The Agni became a series of missiles, with the latest one
being Agni-V, successfully tested in 2018.

DNA fingerprinting
DNA fingerprinting in India came into existence in 1988 when
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Centre for Cellular
and Molecular Biology (CSIR–CCMB) scientists developed the
technique and made it available for use, making India the third
country to develop its own DNA fingerprinting probe.

Pokhran-II nuclear test


India conducted an underground nuclear explosion at Pokhran in
1974, codenamed ―Smiling Buddha.
Pokhran-II: In 1998, five nuclear devices (including thermonuclear
bombs) were successfully detonated.
On 11th May 1998, India successfully tested five nuclear bombs
underground in Pokhran, Rajasthan—these tests were titled
‘Pokhran-II’.
In order to facilitate the technological achievement of an emerging
democracy, this day was named ‘National Technology Day’ by our
then Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It is observed each
year.

Chandrayaan-I mission to the moon
Chandrayaan-I was India’s first-ever mission to the moon, launched
on 22nd October 2008 from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The
spacecraft hovered around the moon to deliver chemical, photo
geologic, and mineralogical mapping to ISRO.

Polio-free India
India accounted for around 60% of the global cases of polio in
1994. A dedicated campaign to vaccinate every child by the
Government enabled us to become polio-free within two decades.
India received the ‘Polio-free’ certification from World Health
Organization (WHO) on 27th March 2014.

Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) (also known as Mangalyaan)
A historic first for India—its first ever interplanetary mission. MOM
marked India’s place in the field of space exploration. Launched on
5th November 2013, MOM studied Mar’s topography, morphology,
mineralogy and atmosphere. Apart from the scientific
breakthroughs, MOM is also lauded for its cost effectiveness.
Aditya-L1 Mission: In September 2023 India launched the Aditya-
L1 mission, the first space-based Indian mission to study the Sun.
Gaganyaan: The Gaganyaan Mission is an ongoing project in India
to send a three-person crew to a 400 km Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
Cryogenic Technology: In 2003, the Indian space agency
successfully tested its first cryogenic engine. India is now one of
only six countries to have developed their own cryogenic engines.
Dr. Homi Bhabha formulated India's three-stage nuclear power
programme in the 1950s.
Apsara, the first nuclear fission reactor, was developed in 1956.
Subsequently, nuclear power stations and other reactors have been
developed in India.

Jagdish Chandra Bose: He pioneered the study of radio and
microwave optics, and electro-physiology. He was the first person
to detect radio signals, thus demonstrating wireless communication
for the first time.

He invented the crescograph, through which he measured plant


response to various stimuli and hypothesised that plants can feel
pain, understand affection, etc

CV Raman: He is known for his work on the scattering effect of


light. His finding is called ‘Raman Effect’ for which he received the
Nobel Prize in Physics, in 1930

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar: He was an Indian-American


astrophysicist awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics for his
theoretical studies of the structure and evolution of the stars.

Satyendra Nath Bose: He was an Indian physicist specialising in
quantum mechanics and provided a new derivation of Planck's law.

G.N Ramachandran: He contributed to molecular biophysics,


particularly in the field of protein structure research. He created a
three-dimensional picture of organic material which is known as the
Ramachandran plot.

His discovery of collagen's triple helical structure was important for


the understanding of peptide structure.

Venkataraman Ramakrishnan: He is a Nobel Prize-winning
biochemist who works on the atomic structure of the ribosome as
well as the structure of chromatin and histone.
He demonstrated how ribosomes react to various chemicals using a
3D technique.

The first indigenous aircraft carrier Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant
was commissioned in the Indian Navy in 2022.
