UPHSI SCI8A Lab Activity : Coriolis Efffect Nov.

20, 2024
Introduction:
The Coriolis Effect is the deflection of moving objects when they are viewed in a
rotating reference frame. In oceanography, we are most interested in how the
Coriolis Effect moves winds and ocean currents on the rotating Earth. This activity is
a simple demonstration for students to understand the Coriolis Effect by drawing
arrows as they rotate a double-sided copy of the northern and southern
hemispheres.
Materials:
Pencil, Bond paper, Ruler
Method:
(refer to learning videos and note the steps/procedure)

1. Attach paper to a rotating surface.

2. Mark a center point.
3. Draw lines from the center while rotating; observe the curve (right in the
"Northern," left in the "Southern").

Results:
(attach your photodocumentations and provide a description under each photos
taken to describe/explain your activity)

In the Southern Hemisphere, the same eastward

rotation of the Earth causes an apparent deflection of the line, but this time to the
left relative to the Earth's surface. This leftward deflection is also a result of the
Coriolis effect.

In the Northern Hemisphere, as you draw a straight line on a rotating Earth, the
Earth turns beneath the line. Because the Earth rotates eastward, the line appears
to curve to the right relative to the Earth's surface. This apparent deflection is the
Coriolis effect.

See the attached file answer the question in that file.

Discussion
Questions to Answer:
1. What is the Coriolis Effect?
The Coriolis effect is an apparent force deflecting moving objects right in the
Northern Hemisphere and left in the Southern Hemisphere due to Earth's
rotation.

2. How does the Coriolis Effect affect the direction of motion in the northern
hemisphere?
The Coriolis effect deflects objects to the right.
3. How does the Coriolis Effect affect the direction of motion in the southern
hemisphere?
The Coriolis effect deflects objects to the left.
4. How does the Coriolis Effect influence the direction of trade winds on Earth?
The Coriolis effect deflects trade winds southwest in the Northern
Hemisphere and northwest in the Southern Hemisphere
5. What is upwelling? How does the Coriolis Effect affect upwelling in the
oceans?
Upwelling brings cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. The Coriolis effect deflects
surface water right (causing left-side upwelling) in the Northern Hemisphere and left
(causing right-side upwelling) in the Southern Hemisphere.
