STATISTICS AND PROBABILITIES 2/14

REVISION

INSTRUCTION
This part consists of ONE (1) COMPULSORY question. Answer the question
in the answer booklet provided.

1. Natasya hits 40% of her free throws in basketball games. She had 20
free throws in last week’s game.

(a) Find the probability that she made:

i. at most 2 hits.
(4 marks)

ii. at least 18 hits.

(4 marks)

iii. exactly 4 hits.

(2 marks)

(b) X is discrete random variable that has the expected value 15 and
variance 3. Find:

i. E (5 X − 9 ).
(2 marks)

ii. Var (10 X + 2) − E (7 X ).

(2 marks)

(c) Suppose a KFC restaurant can expect two customers every 3

minutes, on average. Find the probabilities that:

i. at most two customers will enter the restaurant per minute.

(2 marks)

ii. that three or fewer customers will enter the restaurant in a 6

minutes period.

REVISION

INSTRUCTION
This part consists of FIVE (5) questions. Answer THREE (3) questions only in
the answer booklet provided.

1. A study conducted at Community College revealed that students who

attended class 95% to 100% of the time usually received an A in the
class. Students who attended class 80% to 90% of the time usually
received a B or C in the class. Students who attended class less than
80% of the time usually received D or E or eventually withdrew from the
class.
Therefore, the more you attend class, the more likely you will receive a
higher grade. If you improve your attendance, your grade will probably
improve. Many factors affect your grades in a course. One factor that
you have considerable control over is attendance. You can increase
your opportunities for learning by attending class more often.

(a) State the sample and population of the survey.

(5 marks)

(b) What is the variable of interest in this research? State also the
type of variable.
(5 marks)

(c) Identify the level of measurement for each variable.

(4 marks)

(d) Determine whether the variable obtained is qualitative or

quantitative.

i. The number of stray cats at a market.

(2 marks)

ii. Marital status of teachers.

(2 marks)

iii. The number of motorcycles parked at a supermarket.

2. Table 1 shows the frequency distribution of the time spent by 50

swimmers in the pool in a swimming practice.

Table 1: Frequency distribution

Time (in seconds) Frequency

10 - 19 10

20 - 29 8

30 - 39 23

40 - 49 2

50 - 59 4

60 - 69 3

(a) Based on Table 1:

i. draw a cumulative frequency curve (ogive) to represent the

above data.[Use graph paper]
(6 marks)

ii. find the semi inter-quartile range by using the cumulative

frequency curve.
(4 marks)

iii. calculate mean and median for the above data.

(6 marks)

iv. determine the shape of the data.

3. The mean wage per hour for all 1000 employees working at a large
company is RM 12.50 with a standard deviation of RM 1.20. Let X be
the mean wage per hour for a random sample of certain employees
selected from this company.

(a) Find the mean and standard deviation of xത for a sample size of

i. 10
(3 marks)

ii. 900
(3 marks)

(b) A group of students at a school takes a history test. The

distribution is normal with a mean of 25, and a variance of 16.
Find:

i. P( X  26 ).
(3 marks)

ii. P(28  X  33).

(5 marks)

iii. The percentage of your answer in Question 3 (b) (ii).

probability of a person suffering side effects from a certain
medication is 0.6. A sample of 12 persons from different
backgrounds was involved in the research. Find the probability
that the person suffers from the side effects if :

i. at most 2 person is selected.

(2 marks)

ii. 1 to 3 persons are selected.

defined as below:

α(15 − x) , x = 2,4,6,8,10
