Situation no. 1 (15 points)
A loose, uncompacted sand fill 2.5 m in depth has a relative density of 40%. Laboratory tests
indicated that the minimum and maximum void ratios of sand are 0.45 and 0.85 respectively. Use Gs
= 2.65.
a. What is the dry unit weight of the sand in kN/m3?
b. If the sand is compacted to a relative density of 60%, what is the new thickness of the fill in
meters?
c. If the sand is compacted to a relative density of 50%, how much is the decrease or increase
in thickness of the fill in meters?

Situation no. 2 (15 points)

A sample of dry soil was shaken through a nest of sieves and the following results were obtained:

Sieve No. Diameter (mm) Mass Retained (g)

4 4.750 15.80
8 2.360 5.10
10 2.000 13.00

80 0.180 4.90
100 0.150 2.30
200 0.075 6.70
Pan 1.80

a. What is the effective size of the sample of the sample?

b. What is the coefficient of curvature of the sample?
c. What is the sorting coefficient of the sample?

D10 = 0.271 mm
D25 = 0.445 mm
D30 = 0.492 mm
D60 = 0.993 mm
D75 = 1.515 mm
a. D10 = 0.271 mm
b. Cc = D30^2/(D60*D10) = (0.492)^2/(0.993 *0.271)= 0.900

c. So =
√ 1.515

Situation no. 4 (15 points)

A confined aquifer is shown in the figure. The aquifer has a hydraulic conductivity of 40 m/day and a
porosity of 0.25. The piezometric heads in the two observation wells 1,200 m apart are 65 m and 60
m from the common datum. The aquifer has an average width of 4 km.

a. What is the rate of flow of water in m3/day?

b. What is the seepage velocity in m/day?
c. What is the time of travel from the head of the aquifer to a point 3.30 km downstream in
days?
65−60 3
a. q=kia=40( )(4000∗25)=16,666.67 m /day

b. v=ki ; v=40 (

c. t=d / v se=3,300/0.667=4950 days

The table shows the data for a shrinkage limit test.
Mass of dish 15.64 g
Mass of dish with wet soil 76.47 g
Mass of dish with dry soil 62.56 g
Volume of wet soil 32.85 g
Mass of dish 130.00 g
Mass of dish and displaced mercury 240.70 g
Unit mass of mercury 13.60 g/cm3

a. What is the initial moisture content of the soil in percentage?

76.47−62.56
w= =¿0.2964 = 29.64%
62.56−15.64

b. What is the shrinkage limit of the soil in percentage?
