Getting to Know One’s Self

Self concept
Everything that you know about yourself is called. It is your perception
of yourself, how you define and understand yourself as a multi-dimensional
(physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and moral) human being.

! Physical characteristics
are used to describe how you look in either a positive or negative way;
! Personality traits
are the stable characteristics that determine your behavior
! Social identity
would refer to the social group where you belong.

Self-concepts
are never simple, given the differences in backgrounds of individuals.

Self-complexity,
or the different ways in which you think about yourself, can be high or low according to researchers.

Self-Esteem
When you evaluate yourself against others based on your knowledge of yourself,
your self-esteem is affected.

self-worth
(how much you value yourself)

self-efficacy
(the belief and confidence that you can accomplish tasks and controlyour environment).

Self-awareness
is the ability to know yourself extensively,
! Self-Awareness Theory:
When you focus on yourself, there is the
tendency to compare what you currently observe to the standards you set for yourself.
! Self-Discrepancy Theory:
When there is a mismatch between your ideal
self and your actual self, this becomes a source of distress for you and is much likely to affect your
self-esteem.
! Self-Concept Clarity
Having a clear and defined self-concept

Steps to Self-Awareness

1. Ask yourself why.

2. Delay gratification.

3. Take feedback constructively.

4. Let go of biases.

5. Use tools to know yourself.

6. Reflect often.

many things that you can learn by listening
to the sharing of personal experiences,
characteristics, and habits of others.

Social Learning Theory


Albert Bandura
proposed the Social Learning
Theory. According to him, people learn from
each other.
Conditions for Effective Modeling

1. Attention
. It refers to the active processing of specific information about your
surroundings.

2. Retention.
It is described as remembering the person, object, action, or event where attention is given.

3. Reproduction.
It is the duplication of the object, action, action, or event.

4. Motivation.
It is the push to imitate or duplicate.

Reciprocal Determinism.
Bandura also emphasized that the person’s behavior and the world cause each other.

Journals as Tools of Self-Reflection

1. Keeping a journal is one way of venting safely.

2. It enhances creativity.

3. Recording good ideas.

4. Habit formation.

SELF
Many people are unaware that the self is influenced by varying factors. These factors play vital
roles; and their combined forces create feelings, perspectives, and attitudes that can make a
person well-adjusted or not.

Holistic Development -
An adolescent is constantly changing.These changes occur simultaneously and are never-ending.

Holism
- General Jan C. Smuts, according to him, it is the tendency in nature to form wholes that are
greater than the sum of the parts through creative evolution.

General Jan C. Smuts, a statesman from South Africa, defined holism in


1926. He first made use of the term in his book Holism and Evolution.

LESSON 4
DUALISM
- is associated with Rene Descartes. He is a philosopher who proposed the theory of DUALITY.
- is a philosophical term that speaks of the independence between the functioning of the mind and
the body. This thought existed before, but it is being refuted today.

DUALITY.
Is the recognition and comprehension of the nature of things dually.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT) -

According to this technique, your behavior is affected by how you think and feel.

1. REWARDS AND ASSOCIATIONS -


These two factors are combined to jumpstart the process.

2. CHANGING IRRATIONAL BELIEFS


- Irrational beliefs are thoughts that are not based on reality. This can be done by challenging the
beliefs of a person and finding out if they havebases in reality.

3. REFLECTION AND AUTOMATIC JUDGEMENT - Automatic judgment happens when a previous


experience crosses the mind,and the person automatically judges the experience.

Taking Care of the Mind and Body


Sleep.
Exercise.
Write a journal..
Rest during weekends.
Remind yourself to smile and be happy.
