The Kingdom of Morocco is situated in northwestern Africa. It has a long coastline on the Atlantic ocean that reaches past the Straits of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean Sea. and subtropical, cooled by breezes from the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic ocean. In the interior the temperatures are more extreme, winters can be fairly cold and the summers very hot. Marrakech has an average winter temperature of 21c and 38c in summer. In the Atlas Mountains, temperatures can drop below zero and High Atlas Mountain peaks are snow-capped throughout most of the year. The winter in the north of the country is wet and rainy, while in the south, at the edge of the Moroccan Sahara, it is dry and can get cold at night.

DAY 8 - DAY 9: MARRAKECH Spend the days at leisure or take an optional tour. The first feeling one has when entering this particular Imperial capital is one of pure enchantment. framed by the snowy heights of the High Atlas Mountains, with rose-coloured ramparts and a thousand-year old palm grove, Marrakech casts a magic spell. Sumptuous and exuberant, it radiates splendour and mysticism; at the dye merchants, in the explosion of multicoloured wools; at festival time, in the rhythm of the music, in the emotion of the dancers; in the idle talk of the merchants and in the skill of the jugglers. Enchantment, which you feel in the shade of the blue gardens and in the overwhelming perfection of the Koutoubia. DAY 3: FEZ A full day to explore fez. Surrounded by walls, it is the worlds oldest and most intact medieval city, with some 9000 intricate streets and alleys, exotic overlapping souks and a timeless swirl of smells, colours and voices. See the 9th century Karaouine Mosque (from outside) and university. A visit to the bustling souk is like entering another world. from the roofs of surrounding buildings, view the amazing dyers quarter with its ancient tanning vats and traditional ways of working leather. Light lunch in a local restaurant. Overnight: Fez (BLD) DAY 4: FEZ - MEKNES - AZROU - BENI MELLAL - AFOURER Drive to Meknes. In the heart of the delightful Moroccan countryside, Meknes is one of Moroccos most striking imperial cities. It is ringed by 25 miles of defensive walls and a series of monumental gateways, the most impressive of which is bab al-Mansour. Travel through the Middle Atlas Mountains to Azrou, famous for its woodcarvings and continue to the fruit-growing region of beni Mellal. Arrive in Afourer; a quiet berber town nestled in the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Overnight: Afourer (BD) DAY 5: AFOURER - MARRAKECH Travel along the oum er rbia valley to Marrakech. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight: Marrakech (BD) DAY 6: MARRAKECH Morning tour of the historical sights of this Imperial city of Morocco, see the 16th century Saadian Tombs, the Medersa ben youssef, the 12th century Menara Gardens and the Koutoubia Mosque, with a landmark minaret that can be seen from almost anywhere in the town. Lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon visit to the Medina, end your day in the fabulous Djmaa El fna Square with its myriad of street performers, soothsayers, storytellers, snake charmers and henna painters. DAY 1: CASABLANCA Arrive casablanca, transfer to hotel. Overnight: Casablanca (D) DAY 2: CASABLANCA - RABAT - VOLUBILIS - FEZ Morning visit to the Hassan II Mosque, the largest Mosque outside Mecca. continue to rabat and visit the Hassan Tower and the Mohamed v Mausoleum where Hassan II is also buried alongside his father; the Kasbah of the oudayas and the oudaya Gate. Depart for volubilis, a window into the roman history of Morocco. The city is entered through six gates and surrounded by 2.5kms of ramparts. It was a thriving settlement until the 4th century, with fine mosaics, sculptures and kitchenware. The citys architectural splendor is ample proof of its rich past. Evening arrival in fez. DAY 5: FEZ Explore this magnificent city, one of the best living examples of a medieval Arab city. See the Karaouine Mosque (from outside) and Medersas. Experience the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the labyrinth of souks and tanneries. Photo stops at the imposing gate of bab boujloud, the ancient ramparts, the splendid fountain at Place Nejjarine and the beautiful front entrance to the royal Palace. Lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon for shopping (time permitting). Overnight: Fez (BLD) DAY 6: FEZ - MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS - MARRAKECH Depart fez and travel south through the cedar forests of Ifrane, the almost Alpine-like ski resort in the Middle Atlas Mountains. continue through the fruit-growing region of beni Mellal before arriving late afternoon in Marrakech. Overnight: Marrakech (BLD) DAY 7: MARRAKECH Explore the historical sights of Marrakech in the morning. After lunch, visit the souk and the fabulous Djmaa El fna Square with its myriad of street performers, soothsayers, storytellers, snake charmers and henna painters. Travel north along the Atlantic coast to El Jadida and see the Portuguese cisterns. continue to the commercial capital, casablanca. casablanca features a wondrous mix of shining contemporary architecture, Art Deco and neo-Moorish styles. Palm trees eight storeys tall line the boulevards. The magnificent Hassan II Mosque, Moroccos tallest structure, towers over the entire landscape. Depart for the Imperial city of rabat and visit the Hassan Tower and the Mohamed v Mausoleum where the late Majesty King Hassan II is also buried alongside his father. Overnight: Rabat (BLD) DAY 4: RABAT - MEKNES - VOLUBILIS - FEZ Depart for the Imperial city of Meknes. visit the old ramparts, the Agoudal basin, the stables and one of the most beautiful gates in the Kingdom of Morocco the bab el Mansour, before breaking for lunch. continue to volubilis, with its impressive roman ruins and mosaics which are particularly well preserved. DAY 4: ZAGORA - ALNIF - ERFOUD Travel northeast skirting the Sahara between the Jbels Sarhro (The Dry Mountain) and beni. Lunch in the small village of Alnif. Travel via Taffilalet oasis to Erfoud, a french foreign Legion outpost. optional tour by Land rover to Merzouga and Erg chebbi, the highest dunes in the Sahara, to witness a spectacular sunset or sunrise. Overnight: Erfoud (BLD) DAY 5: ERFOUD - TODRA GORGE - TINEGHIR Travel through the almost lunar landscape along the High Atlas Mountains to the Todra Gorges. The Todra Gorge is clearly one of the most dramatic sights in Morocco, some 300m high but only 10m wide at its narrowest point and with a crystal clear river running through it. Overnight: Tineghir (BLD) DAY 6: TINEGHIR - DADES GORGES - ROAD OF 1000 KASBAHS OUARZAZATE Travel along the fabled road of Thousand Kasbahs to ouarzazate. Lunch at the entrance to the impressive Dades Gorges. Overnight: Ouarzazate (BLD)
DAY 1: MARRAKECH Arrive Marrakech, transfer to hotel. Overnight: Marrakech (D) DAY 2: MARRAKECH - OUARZAZATE Depart Marrakech and travel southeast across the Haouz Plain. Enjoy an exhilarating drive up the twisting roadway to the Tizi n Tichka pass (2260m) and descend gently alongside the Assif Imini to the beau Geste city of ouarzazate. ouarzazate has served as the centre of international filmmakers, when shooting desert and semi desert scenes in movies like The Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and The Sheltering Sky. Overnight: Ouarzazate (BLD) DAY 3: OUARZAZATE - DRAA VALLEY - ZAGORA After breakfast, travel through the Draa valley to the edge of the Sahara, Zagora. (Dont miss the sign telling you the number of days by camel to Timbuctou!) visit the Tamegroute Mosque which houses a Koran written on strips of vellum, some original maps of Alexandria and an original maths primer. Spend the night in the desert Hamada town of Zagora, once an important stop for the caravans with their gold, salt and slaves. Overnight: Zagora (BLD)
DAY 7: OUARZAZATE - KASBAHS AND KSOURS - MARRAKECH Explore the ex french foreign Legion town of ouarzazate. See the Kasbah Taourirt, once the home of the all-powerful Glaoui family made famous by Gavin Maxwell in his book Lords of the Atlas. continue to the Ait ben Haddou Kasbah, now a uNESco World Heritage Site and the backdrop to many Hollywood movies. Depart for Marrakech. Afternoon visit to the Medina and the fabulous Djmaa El fna Square with its myriad of street performers, soothsayers, storytellers, snake charmers and henna painters. Hike the High Atlas Valleys Villages & Valleys in the High Atlas
DEPArTS DAILy LEvEL of DIffIcuLTy: Easy to moderate. boots recommended. you need to be reasonably confident of your fitness, preferably having had some previous experience of trekking. you should bring a sleeping bag; a list of recommended gear will be provided. DAY 1: MARRAKECH - IMLIL - TACHEDDIRT Leaving Marrakech, we drive into the foothills of the Western High Atlas ranges, to the village of Imlil. We set out for a hike up to Tizi nTamatert (2272m), through orchards of walnut, apple and cherry trees, until we reach the village of Tamatert (1810m). from here, our path leads us through pine and juniper woods. We stop to admire the Imlil and Imenane valleys. Through villages set amidst terraced plots of land carved from the hard slopes, we stop for a picnic. The afternoon will be spent hiking for 3 hours up through the valley along mule trails until we reach the pretty and oldest - berber village in the Toubkal Massif, Tacheddirt (2291m), set amongst terraced plots clawed from the craggy slopes. We suggest you take a walk through the village and meet the welcoming berber villagers. Overnight: Gite dEtape (Berber House) (LD) DAY 2: TACHEDDIRT - IAABASSENE - TIMICHI After an early breakfast, we start our 6 hour hike to the terraced village of Timichi (1860m), at the western offshoot of the ourika valley. for 2 hours we hike slowly up to the Tizi nTacheddirt (3200m), which offers stunning panoramic views of the Jebel Aksoul (3842m), bou Iguenouane (3882m) and Angour (3616m) and a verdant valley stretching way below us. We traverse the pass and continue on down through the rocks for a further 2 hours until we reach the berber village of Iaabassene (2030m), where well stop for a picnic. The afternoons 2 hour hike takes us down the valley to the old village of Timichi, set amongst ancient nut trees. Overnight: Berber family home (BLD) DAY 3: TIMICHI - SETTI FADMA - MARRAKECH After breakfast, we set out for a 4 to 5 hour hike through the valley full of cornfields and orange groves with many streams flowing from the upper slopes, passing through the small villages. We arrive at the end of the beautiful ourika valley and the renowned berber village of Setti fadma, with its ancient nut trees and waterfalls. We stop for a picnic outside the village, before hiking on for a further half an hour to rejoin our vehicle to take us back to Marrakech. (BL) DEPArTS DAILy DAY 1: MARRAKECH - TAMATERT Transfer from Marrakech to Tamatert, your base for the next four nights. The Guesthouse offers an authentic taste of berber life, and has four simple but comfortable bedrooms (each with its own small shower), and two lounges. Like the other village houses, it has no electricity - the rooms are warmed by open fires and lit by candles which create a cosy glow. The food, prepared by village women, is some of the best you will taste in Morocco. Overnight: Berber Guesthouse (D) DAY 2 - 4: HIKING TRAILS Each day walk through fields of wheat and orchards of walnut, apple and cherry trees, through small villages and along beautiful valleys surrounded by the Atlas Mountains. Each days walk is between 4 to 7 hours, led by experienced local guides. We stop for field picnics and return to our guesthouse each afternoon. Overnight: Berber Guesthouse (BLD) DAY 5: TAMATERT - MARRAKECH Transfer from Tamatert to Marrakech. (B)

DAY 1: MARRAKECH -TEGHRAMT NAT SULTAN Early morning departure from Marrakech in 4WD over the Glaoua Plain, cross the High Atlas Mountains via the stunning Tizi nTichka Pass. continue to the uNESco World Heritage Site of At ben Haddou, and further into the desert to the ex-french foreign Legion town of ouarzazate. Arrive in the oasis village of Zagora. After lunch, set off on camels for a 2 -hour trek through the oases and Kasbahs. continue to our berber black-tented campsite nestling amongst some small dunes. Dinner under the canopy of the starlit heaven. Overnight: Tent or sleep under the stars (LD) DAY 2: TEGHRAMT NAT SULTAN - CHGGAGA DUNES After sunrise, we venture southwest by 4WD vehicles along the Jbel bani (1095m) - past wells and irrigated fields. Arrive in the village of foum Zguid, a military outpost once controlling the trans-Saharan trade routes of salt, slaves, spices and gold. Stop for a picnic in a small oasis. continue to the impressive dunes of this western extension of the Sahara and our Nomad campsite in the middle of nowhere. Watch the sunset as the heavens turn from bright blue to cobalt; yellow to gold and purple to black. Overnight: Tent or sleep under the stars (BLD) DAY 3: CHGGAGA DUNES - ZAGORA - MARRAKECH Travel east across the desert plain to the dunes at Erg Lihoudi. on to the last village in the Draa valley - MHamid El bhali, once an important trading post and dromedary market for the famous blue Men (Touaregs from the Sudan, Mauritania and chad). This is still a meeting point for the nomads from the Sahel and deep Sahara. continue to the ancient village of Tamegroute, a seat of learning since the XIth century. Stop to visit the still-inhabited Kasbah and the Library, with its XIII century illuminated Koran scrolls written on gazelle hide, some works of Pythagoras, some original maps of Alexandria together with some very early text books. Depart for Zagora, stop for a light lunch. continue along the lush Dra valley through the french Protectorate-era city of ouarzazate to Marrakech. (BL)
