Question (1): [6 Marks]
1) Which measure of central tendency will always change if a single value in the data changes?
A) Mean
B) Median
C) Mode
D) Variance
2) If a positively skewed distribution has a median of 50, which of the following statement is true?
A) Mean is greater than 50
B) Mean is less than 50
C) Mode is less than 50
D) Both A and C
3) The class width and the class boundaries for the second class for the data with minimum value 7.5 and
maximum value 31.5 divided into 5 classes are:
A) 5, 12.45-17.45
B) 4.9, 12.35-17.25
C) 4.9, 12.45-17.45
D) 5, 12.35-17.25
4) Comparing the variations and the relative positions of the two test scores A and B with
= X A 38= , X A 40= , s A 5 and = X B 94= , X B 100 = , sB 10 gives:
A) B is more variable than A and the score B is relatively higher than the score for test A.
B) B is more variable than A and the score A is relatively higher than the score for test B.
C) A is more variable than B and the score A is relatively higher than the score for test B.
D) A is more variable than B and the score B is relatively higher than the score for test A.
Question 1 2 3 4
Answer
Question (2): [7 Marks]
For the following data:
1, 11.5, 6, 7.2, 4, 8, 25, 9, 10, 6.8, 8.3, 2, 2, 10, 1
a) Determine the sample standard deviation.
b) Compute the outlier(s), if any.
c) What value corresponds to the 6th Decile?
d) Find the percentile rank for the value 4.
e) Construct a boxplot for the previous data.
Question (3): [4 Marks]
Consider the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
i) How many four-digit numbers can be formed from these digits (repetition is not allowed)
ii) How many of these four-digit numbers are even (repetition is not allowed)?
Question (4): [3 Marks]
A student received a B in Mathematics (3 credits), a C in Chemistry (3 credits) and a C+ in
+
Projection (2 credits). Assuming A = 4 grade points, B+ = 3.3 grade points, B = 3 grade points,
B- = 2.7 grade points, C+ = 2.3 grade points, C = 2.0 grade points and C- = 1.7 grade points.
a) Find the student’s grade in Statics (2 credits) if the student’s grade point average GPA for
these 4 subjects is 2.59.
b) Using results from (a), considering the following two ways for the student to improve his
GPA:
i) Taking Human Rights (2 credits)
ii) Improving the most suitable subject he already passed.
Assuming the student recorded the maximum score, which of the two methods gives a better
GPA?
