2. Execution of Aerial Triangulation

In this exercise, you are going to perform the following basic steps:

 Create a new project.

 Add imagery to the block file.
 Define the camera model.
 Set the Interior and Exterior Orientation
 Measure GCPs and check points.
 Use the automatic tie point collection function.
 Triangulate the images.
 Orthorectify the images.
 View the orthoimages.
 Save the block file.
2.1Create a new project.

 Start your system (PC) and run ERDAS IMAGINE

 Create working directory in D:/dig-photo
 Run LPS and create a new project( d:\Bole_Block)
 “File/New” enter a name of aerial triangulation block project

2.2Model Setup
 From Model Setup select “Frame Camera”
 From “Block Property” for the Horizontal set “Projection” standard “UTM WGS
84” Projection UTM Zone 37
 Set the Custom to

 For the Vertical set the Projection as

 Click Next and set the “Average Flying Height” to 912 Meters

2.3 Add Image to the New Project

 Select “Edit /Add Frame” and navigate to your folder. Set files of type to .img/tiff. Select all files and
click “OK”.

 When finished the “pyramid and online” are in green.

 Select “ edit\Frame editor”, click on sensor “camera” and set the general camera information to
 fill the “Fudicials and Radial lens distortion” then click “OK”

2.4 Interior Orientation

 To set the photo according to the flight direction i.e 180 select this icon

 To transfer the fudicial coordinates select

 Use this icon to transfer the fudicial coordinate at the center of each fudicial marks and click
“Next” to apply this for the remaining photos. Then click “OK”. When this is applied correctly the
“Int.” should be turned to Green
2.5Exterior Orientation

 from Frame Camera Editor, select “Exterior Information”

 Enter Xo,Yo,Zo(Perspective center of the Images)
 You can either click “Next” for next image or click on “Edit all Images” for entering their values

2.6 Check the Image- When all parameters are correct; the image footprints of the strip are
displayed.

2.7 Import Ascii Ground Control Points

 Select Edit/Point Measurement
 Click ”OK” for “Classical Point Measurement Tool”
 Click “Add” to insert the available GCP’s
 Hold “Shift” and select the X,Y,Z References of the points
 Right click on the top of X Reference and select “Import”
 Locate your file and select “gcp.txt”
 Click “Option” and select “White Space” for “Separation Character”
 Click “Ok”
 Change the columns of Type to “Full” and Usage to “Control”
2.8Measuring Control Points

 Display Image 4094 on the Left View and 4093 on the right
 Measure the exact position of the first control Point on both Photo’s by using button and repeat
similar operations to measure all GCP’s given. When finished save your measurements.
2.9 Automatic Tie Point Generation and Computation

 Click on to Display the “Automatic Tie Properties” dialogue box and set the
following parameters and click “Run”.

 This process will take few minutes. When completed before performing Triangulation it is advisable to
check all the generated Tie points By clicking on “ “ and make sure that no big error remains.

 Click on for performing “ Aerial Triangulation”

 Set “same weighted value” for the Type and keep default values for the rest.
 Click “Run” to compute, when complete check also the “Report”
 Analyze and improve the results until expected result is obtained.

 Click on to display the final “Triangulation Summary”
