Good morning / afternoon. Today I will discuss dopamine and, while it is seen as a pleasure
and motivation source, its overstimulation can lead into some mental health problems.
Before I start, I would like to say that I choose to talk about dopamine because it plays such a
significant role in our everyday lives whether we know it or not. In today's digital era, we are
indirectly overstimulating our dopamine receptors, which can hence to mental health and
well-being problems. I believe that understanding its negative effects can help us to have a
well - rounded and healthy lifestyle.
And, what is dopamine? It is a neurotransmitter, or brain chemical. Known as one of the four
“feel good” hormones, plays a role in regulating pleasure, motivation and gratification. But
what happens if we become too reliant on it for instant gratification?
Dopamine is released in our brain when we experience something that gives us an unphysical
mental reward taking a walk in the forest, or finishing an intense training session. That
reward is meant to be a trigger to repeat that activity one more time.
But, when the brain is overstimulated or flooded with that chemical, it starts needing more
and more, and basically, we get addicted to it. That addiction to instant gratification can lead
into seeking stimulation in unhealthy ways. There are some social media platforms like
TikTok that are exclusively designed for keeping users hooked and trigger that
overstimulation.
It is demonstrated by several studies that these behaviours create a side effect called
Dopamine Imbalance, which leads to some mental health conditions like depression, lack of
motivation or apathy.
