In a right triangle with sides A, B, and hypotenuse C, the theorem states that A² + B² = C². The hypotenuse is the longest side, opposite the right angle. HISTORY OF PYTHAGORAS The Pythagorean theorem was first known in ancient Babylon and Egypt (beginning about 1900 B.C.). The relationship was shown on a 4000 year old Babylonian tablet now known as Plimpton 322. However, the relationship was not widely publicized until Pythagoras stated it explicitly. Pythagoras found out that for a right angle triangle (with one of the angles being 90o), the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides: a2+b2=c2. DISCOVERY OF PYTHAGORAS THEOREM In mathematics, the Pythagorean theorem or Pythagoras’ theorem is a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry between the three sides of a right triangle. It states that the area of the square whose side is the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares on the other two sides.The theorem can be written as an equation relating the lengths of the sides a, b and the hypotenuse c, sometimes called the Pythagorean equation:c^2=a^2+b^2
The theorem is named for the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, born
around 570 BC. The theorem has been proved numerous times by many different methods – possibly the most for any mathematical theorem. The proofs are diverse, including both geometric proofs and algebraic proofs, with some dating back thousands of years. PROOF OF PYTHAGORAS THEOREM We Will take three squares of different sides and we will join two corners of each square like this : In this picture we will see that the sum of area of Square a and b will be equal to square c. A^2+b^2=c^2. If we will fill the square a and b with liquid then We will see that liquid filled in both small squares will equal to the biggest one . So by this we can proof Pythagoras theorum. The Liquid in two small squares get completely filled in the big square. Numerical proof: This is right angled triangle with base 12cm and Perpendicular 5cm and hypotenuse 13cm. We know that H^2=P^2+B^2 (13)^2 = (5)^2 + (12)^2 169= 25 + 144 169=169 Hence again Pythagoras Theorum is proved. APLICATION OF PYTHAGORAS THEOREM IN REAL LIFE Some of the important real-life uses of the Pythagorean theorem are as follows: Used in construction and architecture. Used in two-dimensional navigation to find the shortest distance. Used to survey the steepness of the slopes of mountains or hills. To calculate the length of staircase required to reach a window To find the length of the longest item can be kept in your room. To find the steepness of the hills or mountains. To find the original height of a tree broken due to heavy rain and lying on itself To determine heights and measurements in the construction. CONCLUSION In summary, the Pythagorean Theorem stands as a cornerstone of mathematics, providing us with a powerful tool to solve various problems involving right triangles. Its elegant simplicity belies its profound significance in fields ranging from architecture to astronomy.
