How to know if a word is a noun,an adjective or a verb?

We can know if a word is a noun, an adjective or a verb by having a look at its


appearance, function, formation and position in the sentence .
As we have eight parts of speech, the answer of the question has logically eight points.

1)_ Noun : a word in a sentence is a noun if :

a)_It is a name.
e.g : John is my friend.(‘’ John’’ is the name of a boy/ man.)
‘’Friend’’ is the name of relation/relationship.)

b)_It ends in : ness , ty, tion, ence, ense, ance, ch, tch, sion.
Examples :
*Truthfulness is a great vertue. ( truthfulness is the name of quality.)
*-Beauty is the noun form of the adjective word ‘’ beautiful’’ ( the word beauty is a noun.)
*Election is better than selection.( election, selection = noun.
*Boyhood follows childhood and precedes manhood. ( boyhood ; childhood and manhood = noun.)
*Words are properly arranged in a sentence.( sentence = noun.)
*Tense is the form of the verb which indicates the time of the happening of the action of the verb.
(tense = noun.)

c)_ It can be made singular or plural.


Examples :
* _ Boy = boys. ( s has been added to boy.)
*_ Match = matches. ( es has been added to match.)
* _ Leaf = leaves. ( ves has been added to leaf. )
*_ City = cities . ( ies has been added to city. )

d)_ It is the subject or object.


e.g: Mike has a new friend.
‘’Mike’’ = noun ( subject ) , “ Friend’’ = ( object )

2)_ Pronoun: A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun, thing or idea in a sentence.
Examples: this, that, he, she, it, we , they, him, her ...etc
e.g. This book belongs to her friend.( this , her = pronoun)

3)_ Adjective : a word is an adjective if it describes ( sth , sb , shows : quantity , quality ,number of
possession or if it particularises (sth), (sb).
Most adjectives end in ; ful ,ent ,ant , ous , ing, and if it can be compared , that is to say , it has
comparison.
Examples :
*_ A beautiful woman. ( beautiful describes woman.)
*_ I need little water. ( little shows the quantity of water )
*_ Four boys only are present. ( Four shows the number of boys)
*_ My house ( My = shows the possession of the house)

4)_ Verb: A word is a verb if it says something about the subject, describes an action, experience.
A verb changes its form in number, person, tense, voice, speech...etc
e.g:*_ He eats rice ( eats says about the subject he )
* _He is eating rice.( eat changes its form in tense.)
* _ Rice is eaten by him. ( eat has changed its form in voice, from active to passive voice.)

5) _ Adverb: an adverb tells how often, how, when, where .It can describe a verb , an adjective or an
adverb,( any word in the sentence except noun and pronoun.)
_ Most adverbs end in ‘’ly’’ and ‘’lly’’. Some adverbs can be turned back to adjective forms.
Examples:
Beautifully, carefully, attentively, nicely, badly, hopefully, gladly...etc

6)_ Preposition: is used before a noun , pronoun or gerund to show place, time, direction and its
relationship with the rest of the words in a sentence.
e.g: the book is on the table. ( on = preposition )
(on ,at, for , to, in , under, over, above, about, .....etc )

7)_ Conjunction: it is a word that joins words, clauses, phrases or sentences.


e.g. but, and , or, nor, yet for, so, although, since, because , unless, where, while, if, who, which,
why, how, ...etc
There are three types of conjunctions:
1. Coordinating conjunction.
2. Subordinating conjunction.
3.Coorelative conjunction.
8)_ Interjection: Interjections express strong emotion and are often followed by an exclamation
point.
Examples: Hooray! Yeah! Oops! Phew! Bravo: Well ! Aha !
e.g. Yeah ! Finally, I passed this exam !

EXERCISES.
Task 01.Deriving nouns from adjectives.
Find the nouns of the following adjectives.
