Quantum Mechanics Assignment Sheet 2

1. The work function for lithium is 4.6 x 10-19 J.

(a) Calculate the lowest frequency of light that will cause photoelectric emission.
(b) What is the maximum energy of the electrons emitted when light of 7.3 x 1014 Hz is used?

2. Complete the table.

Metal W (eV) W (J) ν (Hz) KEmax (J)

Sodium 2.28 6 x 1014

-19
Potassium 3.68 x 10 0.32 x 10-19
15
Lithium 2.9 1 x 10
Aluminium 4.1 0.35 x 10-19
Zinc 4.3 1.12 x 10-19
Copper 7.36 x 10-19 1 x 1015

3. The stopping potential when a frequency of 1.61 x 1015 Hz is shone on a metal is 3 V.

(a) What is energy transferred by each photon?
(b) Calculate the work function of the metal.
(c) What is the maximum speed of the ejected electrons?

4. Selenium has a work function of 5.11 eV. What wavelength of light would just eject electrons?
Is the light visible?

5. A frequency of 2.4 x 1015 Hz is used on magnesium with work function of 3.7 eV.
(a) What is energy transferred by each photon?
(b) Calculate the maximum KE of the ejected electrons.
(c) The maximum speed of the electrons.
(d) The stopping potential for the electrons.

6. Calculate the frequency and wavelength of the highest-energy X-rays emitted by an X-ray tube operating
at the following voltages: (a) 10 kV, (b) 25 kV, (c) 150 kV, (d) 200 kV.

7. What is the minimum potential difference between the cathode and anode of an X-ray tube if the tube is
to produce X-rays of wavelength 0.05 nm?

8. A beam of X-rays of wavelength 0.15 nm is incident on the face of a crystal of calcite. The smallest angle
at which there is a strongly reflected beam is 15o to the cleavage face. Calculate the distance between
successive layers of the crystal lattice.

9. An experiment was performed for X-rays generation. The following values of minimum wavelength (λmin)
for 5 different accelerating potentials (Va) were observed:

Va (kV) 6.2 12.4 18.6 24.8 31.0

λmin (nm) 0.197 0.0984 0.0656 0.0492 0.0394
Calculate the value of Planck’s constant (h) by taking c = 3 x 108 m/s and e = 1.6 x 10-19.

10. In the Compton effect, an X-ray photon of wavelength 0.29 nm is incident on a stationary electron.
Upon collision with the electron, the scattered X-ray photon continues to travel in the same direction as
the incident photon. What is the wavelength of the scattered photon?

11. A gamma ray photon of wavelength 6.2 pm is incident on an electron initially at rest. The electron is
observed to recoil with kinetic energy 60 keV. Calculate the energy of the scattered γ ray (in keV) and
determine the direction in which it is scattered.
