**Show all appropriate steps/reasoning leading to your answers**

1. Find the derivative using the appropriate rule or combination of rules. Simplify if
possible. [1,2,2,2]

a) f (x) = 3x 2 + x −1 b) h(x) = 5x 3 sin x

c) g(x) =
(x + 1)2
x
d) ( ( x ))
p(x) = sin cos

2. Determine where the following function is not differentiable

[2,2]
x + 2x − 15
2
a) y= b) y = tan(2x), [0, π ]
x2 − 9

d2 y
3. Find for #1(a) above. [1]
dx 2
4. Find an equation of the line tangent to the curve f (x) = sin x + 3 at x = π .
[3]

5. Find an equation of the parabola f (x) = dx 2 + ex + f that passes through ( 0,1) and is
tangent to the line y = x − 1 at (1,0 ) . [3]

6. Given the graphs of f ′(x) , sketch on the same set of axes, reasonable graphs of the
following. [2,2]

7. A particle moves along a line so that its position any time t ≥ 0 is given by the
function s(t) = t 3 − 6t 2 + 8t + 2 where s is measured in meters and t is measured in
seconds.

a) Find the instantaneous velocity at any time t. [1]

b) Find the acceleration of the particle at any time t. [1]

c) Find the jerk of the particle at any time t. [1]

d) When is the particle at rest? Answer should be correct to 3 decimal places. [2]

e) Fill in the blanks or circle the correct answer. Where appropriate, answer correct
to 3 decimal places. [4]

The particle start at the point s= when t = 0, and moves left / right

until it stops at s = at t = . Then it moves left / right to

the point s = at t = where it stops again, and finally

continues left / right from there on.

8. The graph shows how the # of flies
number of fruit flies grew in a
controlled 50-day experiment.
The graph was made by
counting flies at regular
intervals, plotting a point for
each count, and drawing a
smooth curve through the
plotted points.

a) What unit should be used

on the horizontal and
vertical axes for the
derivative’s graph? [2]
# of days

b) During what days does the population seem to be increasing fastest? State the
reason why you think so.
