Very good observation, Ann.

to be achieved at the end of the lesson.
(The teacher will enumerate lesson objectives.)
C. Presentation/ Discussion

Statement is something that is stated such as a

declaration or a remark. It is classified into two:
general and specific.

As we go along, let us distinguish one from the Yes, ma’am!

other. Are you ready?

General Statement – expresses the main point. It

shows the topic sentence or main idea of the
paragraph. It is usually broad and extensive.

Specific Statement – gives support to the topic

sentence or main idea to make the general statement
clear. Specific statements can give examples,
explain, and illustrate a given general statement. In
short, it simplifies and get into the details of the
general statement.

To make it more clear, the teacher will use an

umbrella for an actual representation.

Let’s go back to the given statements:

1. Hannah likes to play games.

2. Hannah likes to play volleyball and badminton.

Why did we identify sentence 1 as a general

statement and sentence 2 as a specific statement? Jacob: Because in the first sentence, we do not know
what kind of games does Hannah like to play while in
Precisely, Jacob. You got it right! the second sentence it was clear that the games Hannah
likes to play are volleyball and badminton.
Now, let us study more examples.

Example 1: Pochollo, my dog, is fun to play with. It

follows me around the house with a toy and drops it
on my foot. It can catch just about anything.

Question: In this paragraph, which statement is

general? Which is specific? Explain why. Abby: The general statement is the first sentence and
the specific statements are the second and third
sentences because the last two sentences are details
Good job, Abby! that support the first sentence that the dog is fun to
play with.
Example 2: We need to water for drinking, cooking,
bathing, cleaning, ad watering the plants. Water has
many uses.

Question: In this paragraph, which statement is

general? Which is specific? Explain why. Bea: The second sentence is general while the second
sentence is specific because it talks about the different
Correct! Well done, Bea! uses of water which supports the first sentence.
D. Group Activity

Now, let’s have some fun. I want you to count into

2. All who counted 1 will be the first group while
all number 2’s will be the second group.
What you are going to do is you have to re-arrange
the jumbled words assigned to you to form a
paragraph. Paste it on the manila paper provided to
you and present your work in front by identifying
which part of the paragraph is the general and
which is specific. The first group to finish the task
will be given 10 points while the other group (if Yes, ma’am!
finished correctly) will be given 5 points. Are we
clear? (Each group will present their work in front.)

Good work, everyone!

E. Analysis
I can see that you are really following our
discussion.

Questions to ponder:

1. Why is it important for us to distinguish Callie: Being able to distinguished between the
general and specific statements? general and specific ideas will help us as a reader to
recognize the claims that the writers make, evaluate the
evidence they provided to support those claims and
we’ll be able to make our own decisions as to whether
those claims are really valid.

2. How can you apply what you’ve learned to Hope: We can apply it on our daily lives like for
your daily lives? You may give an example example in a conversation with someone. If you have
situation. knowledge just like what we have learned today, we’ll
be able to make our own judgment if we’ll believe
agree on what was said to us.

Yes, you two were right about what you’ve said.

Truly the lesson that you learned here will not only
stay here but will be a lot of use when you go
outside the classroom.

F. Abstraction

Now, class, let’s remember that statements are

classified into two.
What are those? : General and specific statements
And how can we distinguish between the two? : General statements are broad, extensive and usually
the topic sentence in the paragraph. Meanwhile, to find
the specific statements, look for examples.
Yes. When things are being enumerated as
examples, explained further or given more details,
that is most likely the specific statement.
G.Application

Now, let’s have another group activity. With the

same group, come up with as many specific words
as you can out of the given general term. You have 3
minutes to finish your task. Make sure that everyone
imparted their own share. Is that clear? Yes, ma’am.

You can start working on your task. (Everyone will start doing their task.)
