C. Discussion
Read the following conversation between father and son. Try
to answer the following questions.

The pupils will answer

the following:
Mang Karding family lives in the city of Gapan in Nueva Ecija.
Including the province in Region Three of Central Luzon. This 1. Equal sharing
region has the largest rice field in the country. He joined his 2. Repeated
son Jose in harvesting rice in the field. They harvested 40 subtraction
sheaves of rice. 3. Use of number
“Jose, son, can you put four four bundles of rice in each pile” line
The father calmly instructed. 4. Formation of
“Okay, dad, I can do it, as long as I only take one at a time” equal groups of
was the cheerful response of the good son. When finished, objects.
Mang Karding assigned the pile they made to his son. “All in
ten piles, father!’’ Jose happily answered as he took their
snacks. Note: Possible questions
may arise, so the teacher
How many sheaves of rice in each pile was given to Jose? How will answer them all
many piles of rice did they finish? nicely.

Grouping or dividing objects is the formation of small groups

with similar numbers. Let’s go back to the discussion above
and answer the following numbers.
Mang Karding harvested 40 sheaves of rice.
He placed four sheaves of rice in pile on his son Jose.

He made ten piles of four sheaves of rice each. Here it can be seen
that objects can be divided into small parts according to the given
number. Based on this, division is done by dividing evenly by total
number of items. Moreover, it can also be described in other ways.

This is through equal sharing, repeated subtraction, equal jumps on

the number line and using the formation of equal groups of objects.

In equal sharing, each number becomes exactly the same when it is

divided equally.

Example:
There are 15 wolves. Five children divided it. Three each.

In repeated subtraction, division is done when the total number is

repeatedly subtracted from what is given to each group or divided.
The answer will be determined when you count the parts given.

Example:

Among your four friends, your teacher gave you 28 pieces of

cupcakes. You have to divide it equally among each other. How do
you do it?
28 is divided by 4
28 – 4 = 24
24 – 4 = 20
20 – 4 = 16
16 – 4 = 12
12 – 4 = 8
8–4=4
4–4=0

This is what they will divide.

You(7)

Friend 1 (7)

Friend 2 (7)

Friend 3 (7)

Therefore, they are four friends each out of 28 pieces of cupcakes.

In equal jumps on the number line, you use a number line to divide
the number. This is done by the skip counting method.

Example:
Your group (all six of you) must split the 18-inch rope. We will use a
number line to do the division correctly. First, divide the rope into six
parts. Second ,measure how many inches each part is. You will see
that its part is three inches. Third , draw a number line (similar to the
one below) and do the division until the end.

Based on the number line we have created, three inches each is the
division between the six of you.

In the formation of equal groups of objects, the objects will be divided

Into equal numbers in each group.
Example:
You have 16 chickens. You have groups them into four because they
are too crowded in one cage. How many each group?

Based on what we have done, each group has four chickens.

Therefore, the 16 chickens when divided in four groups have four
count each.

Teacher:
What are the methods of division?
Process Questions:
? How do we characterize the division situation?
What are the four ways to answer correctly?

? How do the four ways of describing division apply to your daily

life?
