i. Provision, laying and jointing of pipes, excavation and backfilling pipe trenches.

This class excludes the following items.

a. Works included in class J, K, L and Y

b. Pipe building series (included in class Z)

 Concretes pipe
 Iron pipes
 Steel pipe
 Polyvinyl chloride pipes
 Glass reinforced plastic pipes
 High density polyethylene pipes
 Medium density polyethylene pipes

According to measurements rule M3, length of the pipe shall be measured along their centre lines
length of the pipe in trenches shall include lengths occupied by fittings comprising backdrops to
manholes. lengths of pipes not in trenches shall exclude lengths occupied by fitting and valves
As per definition pipe not in trenches shall include pipes suspended or supported above the
ground other surface, pipe in headings, tunnels or shafts
The material joints types, nominal bored and lining requirement of pipes shall be stated in item
descriptions.
Depth of trenches into which the pipes are laid it’s normally given in stages of 0.5m for trenches
where depth exceeds 4m shall be stated in items description to the higher multiples of 0.5m

The item description for pipes fitting such as bends, junctions and tapers are to include nominal
bore, materials, jointing and lining particulars and reference made to applicable British standard
(rule A1)
Class J contain the following items fitting and value for pipe work and exclude work included in
class I, K, L and Y, Pipes building services (included in class Z)
Fittings comprised under this class are bond, junctions and tapers, double collars,

reducing valves and penstocks.
According to measurement rule M1, pipe fittings, comprising back drops to manholes shall be
include in the items for manholes measured in class K
According to measurement rule M2, straights special shall be measured only where they are
expressly required a straight special is a length of pipe either cut to length or made to order
Trenches for unpiped rubble drains, Rectangle section stitches both for unlined and lined, vee
sections stitches both unlined and lined and Trenches for pipes or cables not to be laid by the
contractors are measured in linear meters (M) stating the cross-sectional area in m2
Ducts and metal culvert: measured in linear meters, ducts and metal culverts may be made
/constructs of cable ducts, 1-way, 2-way, 3-way or stated number of ways exceeding these
sectional corrugated metal culvert these sectional corrugated metal culvert, nominal internal
diameter not exceeding 0.5 m into stage of 0.5
The rule in class I for pipe shall also apply to duct sand metal culverts in this class except that the
lengths measured and metal culvert in trenches shall include lengths occupied by fitting
Crossings: Measured in numbers (nr) stating the normal bore of the pipe, crossing may be found
to rivers, streams or canals, hedges walls, fence, sewer or drain and other stated underground
Services, crossing shall be measured for pipes /ducts and metal culverts river stream and clay
crossing shall be classified by their widths measured along pipes ducts or culverts center lines as
per definition rule D6
Reinstatement: it’s normally measured in linear meters stating the nominal bore in stage of
600mm reinstatement can be done through breaking up temporary reinstatement of roads and of
foot path, breaking up and permanent reinstatement of road and of footpath and reinstatement of
land , reinstatement shall be measure to pipe ,ducts and metal culverts and the length
reinstatements shall be measured along center lines and shall include length occupied by man
holes and other chambers ,the dimension used for classification of bore in the third dimension
shall be the maximum nominal distance between the inside face of the center walls of the
pipe ,dust culvert to be installed
Other pipe works ancillaries; it includes reinstatement of field drains measured in (M), marker
posts (nr) timber supports left in excavations (M2) and metal supports left in excavation(M2),
also includes connection to existing manholes and other chambers (nr) connections to existing
pipes, ducts and culvert (nr) stating the nominal bored in stage. The other pipe work ancillaries
shall be measured for pipes, ducts and metal culvert. Also, the lengths measured for
reinstatement of field drain shall be the nominal trench width defined in accordance with rule D1
in class L
