1 A solid circular shaft transmits 75 kW power at 200 rpm. Calculate the 5 3
diameter of the shaft if the twist in the shaft is not to exceed 1º in a length of
2m of the shaft. Shear stress in the shaft is limited to 50MN / m2 .
Take C =100GN/m2 .
2 A hollow shaft is to transmit 300 kw at 80 rpm. If the shear stress in the shaft 5 3
is not to exceed 60MN / m2 and the internal diameter of the shaft is 0.6 times
the external diameter, find the internal and outer diameter of the shaft
assuming maximum torque being greater than mean torque by 40%. The twist
in a shaft is not to exceed 1º in a length of 2m. Take modulus of rigidity of
shaft material as 100GN / m2
3 Two shafts of same length and same material are subjected to the same 5 3
torque. If the first shaft is of solid circular cross section and the second shaft
is of hollow circular cross section whose internal diameter is 2/3 times outside
diameter. Also the maximum shear stress developed in each shaft is same.
Compare the weight of shaft with solid circular cross section to the weight of
shaft with hollow circular cross section.
