Module Content
This module builds upon the 9 core competencies of Public Health
Practice set out by the Faculty of Public Health UK.

The English NHS will form the central empirical case across the nine
key areas for public health training; notably the changing structure,
leadership, evaluation and accountability, for Public Health in
England.

Global comparisons with regards management and delivery of Public


Health will be used along with inequalities across and within nations.

Global, communicable and non-communicable challenges (the triple


burden) will be used to provide integration across the module through
case studies including: obesity; maternal health; mental health;
healthcare associated infections; tuberculosis.

Students will examine Public Health in the broadest definition and


across sectors: education, health, third sector (non- governmental),
private and public, including the roles of multi-disciplinary
professionals and occupational groups to improve public health
outcomes

Acquisition of knowledge and understanding will be through a combination of
lectures, small group work and discussions with lecturers and expert practitioners in
the field of public health teaching, research and practice.

Tutorials sessions will be scheduled either on campus or via MS team via Skype
meetings.

Compulsory Information and Further Details:


This module requires students to pass all components of assessment to pass the
module.

The breakdown of coursework marks is as follows:

Coursework 1 (50%) - Two short answer questions on the usefulness of a public


health theory/approach (as identified by the student), to public health policy
formulation (2000 words) (+/-10%).

This course work must be passed.

Coursework 2 (50%) - comprises of two parts: Part a) Written assignment carried


out in PBL groups.

The students will identify a public health policy for a chosen public health concern in
a country of the groups choosing.

The student group will then undertake a critical analysis of the identified policy using
a framework that integrates the core competencies.

This assessment constitutes 30% of the module grade and is equivalent to 2000
words(+/-10%).

Part b) Written reflective assignment.

Students will be required to write a self-reflective account relating to leadership and


working collaboratively within a team (1000 words)
