MTL506 - Complex Analysis

Tutorial Sheet - 1

1. By writing z in the form z = a + bi or iθ

√ z = re , find all solutions z of the following
2 3
equations: (a) z = −5 + 12i (b) z = 3 + 3i (c) z 2 − (3 + i)z + (2 + 2i) = 0.

2. If λ is a positive real number, show that

{z ∈ C : |z| = λ|z − 1|}

is a circle, unless λ takes one particular value(which?)

3. Draw the set of all z ∈ C satisfying the following conditions:

(a) Re(z) > 2 (b) 1 < Im(z − i) < 2 (c) |z − 1| < |z + 1| (d) zz = 1 (e) z + iz + 1 + i = 0.

4. Express in terms of r, θ the following equations, where z = reiθ :

(a) |z 2 − 1| = 1 (b) arg(iz) = π/4 (c) arg(z 2 ) = π/2.
Simplify the answers as far as you can.

5. Evaluate for n = 1, 2, 3, . . . ,
1−i n
(a) ( 1+i ) (b) (1 − i)n + (1 + i)n .

6. If z ∈ C such that |z| = 3, then show that 13 ≤ | 2z−1
z 2 +4
| ≤ 75 .
1+z+z 2
7. Let z ∈ C \ R such that 1−z+z 2
∈ R, then show that |z| = 1.

8. S
Justify whether the following statement is TRUE or FALSE:
∞ n
n=1 {z ∈ C : z = 1} = {z ∈ C : |z| = 1}.

9. Verify that C with the usual additional + and the multiplication · is a field. Can we
define an order relation ≻ on (C, +, ·) such that it becomes a totally ordered field?

10. Let E denote all the points in the upper half complex plane Im(z) > 0 such that
1
E ∩ {z = + it : 0 ≤ t ≤ 1} = ∅ ∀ n ∈ Z \ {0}.
n
What is the boundary of E, and is the set E open and connected?

11. Show that we may identify, by stereographic projection, the complex plane with the
sphere x2 + y 2 + (u − 1/2)2 = (1/2)2 .
Denote S = {(x, y, u) ∈ R3 : x2 + y 2 + u2 = 1}.

12. For the following points in C find the corresponding points on the S: 1 + i, 3 + 2i.

13. Which subsets of S correspond to real and imaginary axes in C.

14. Consider two antipodal points (x, y, u) and (−x, −y, −u) on the sphere S. Show that
their stereographic projections z and w are related by zw = −1.
