MANUAL NO. 3
INTRODUCTION TO SOLID WORKS:
SolidWorks is a parametric and feature-based software that allows you to create 3D parts,
assemblies, and 2D drawings. The design process in SolidWorks is shown below. If you are a new
user of this software, then the time you spend on learning this software will be a wise
investment. If you had used previous versions of SolidWorks, you will be able to learn the new
enhancements. I welcome you to learn SolidWorks using this book as it provides step-by-step
examples to learn various tools and techniques.
PART ENVIRONMENT:
The Part environment provides you the tools to create parametric solid models. You can start a
document in this environment by clicking the new icon and then double-clicking on the Part
button from the New SOLIDWORKS Document dialog box, as shown.
FEATURES COMMAND MANAGER:
This Command Manager tab has various solid modelling tools used to convert sketches in solid
models.
This option is selected to start the extrude from the plane on which the sketch
is located, as shown. It is selected by default.
This option is selected to start the extrude at offset distance from the current
sketching plane as shown. By entering the required offset distance value in
the Enter Offset Value spinner as shown.
DIRECTION 1:
The options in this rollout are used to set the end condition for extruding the sketch in
one direction from the sketching plane. The options in this rollout are discussed next.
This options in this drop-down list are used to specify depth or depth values while using the
Extrude tool to extrude the sketch. These options are discussed next.
This option is selected by default and is used to extrude a sketch from the
sketching plane by the specified depth value, entered in the Depth spinner,
as shown.
This option is selected to extrude the sketch through all surfaces, as shown.

DEPTH SPINNER:
This spinner is used to set the required depth value for the extruding feature. You can also
enter required depth value in it.
MERGE RESULT:
This checkbox is selected to merge the resultant body with the existing body if possible.
Unless the feature creates an individual sold body.
DRAFT ON/OFF:
This button is selected to specify the draft angle to taper the resultant feature
while extruding the sketch. This button is not selected by
default.
Draw the sketch with a centerline, as shown. Click on the Revolved Boss/Base
tool from the Feature Command Manager and select the axis to display Revolve
Property Manager, as shown. Also, the sketch will be revolved with 360 degrees
angle and the preview of the revolve feature get visible, as shown.
The Thin Feature checkbox in the Revolve Property Manager is used to create
an revolve feature of thin surface or an open loop.
REVOLVED CUT TOOL:
This tool is used to remove the material from the existing feature, by revolving a sketch
around an axis, as discussed earlier in Revolved boss/base tool.
To use the Revolved Cut tool in removing material from existing feature, draw the
sketch on an existing feature created along with the centerline, as shown.
REFERENCE GEOMETRY:
Reference features are considered as non-solid features, used during the construction of other
features. The most common reference features include reference planes, reference axes,
reference coordinate systems, and reference point. The references are very useful, when you
are working over very complex models in SolidWorks. Now, you will learn the tools to create
these features.
The topics are:
• Reference plane
• Reference axis
• Reference Coordinate System
• Centre of mass
REFERENCE PLANE:
Reference planes are created on different combinations, some are discussed below:
Reference plane, offset from any existing/default plane or flat surface.
Reference plane, through an axis, curve, or edge.
Reference plane, normal to an existing plane or flat surface.
Reference plane, parallel to an existing plane or flat surface.
Reference plane, at a specified angle to an existing plane or flat surface.
Reference plane, tangent to any selected cylindrical surface.

COMMENTS:
In this we learnt that how we can convert simple sketches to 3D sketches
through features command manager.
We have also learnt how to use some of the tools in features command like extrude
base and cut, etc.
By this we can easily make different shapes and convert them into 3D.
We have also used some of the reference geometry tools through which we can
easily make changes in our sketch by our requirements.
