Module 1

1. Give a real-life example from life experience which explains Classical Conditioning
BE sure to explain the conditioning sequence and identify the UCS, UCR, (NS –
Neutral Stimulus) the CR and the CS.

One example of Classical Conditioning I experienced was in my classroom. We had

“conduct clips” in elementary school which we acted upon. If someone was loud or
talked too much, then the teacher would tell that student to move his/her clip. UCS is
unconditioned stimulus which acts us natural feeling. When I moved my clip, it was a
natural response that I was in trouble. UCR is unconditioned response, which is new to
the brain. Before my teacher told us about a certain conduct we have to be in, my
classmates and I didn’t know how to act stay within the limits. NS is neutral stimulus;
it is sometimes you don’t really pay attention to like when you hear a sound. CR is
conditioned response; it is a learned behavior. CS is a conditioned response.

2. Explain the processes of generalization, discrimination, extinction and spontaneous

recovery by using “real word examples”.

An example of generalization is when a baby responds to every animal in fear.

Discrimination is when a baby cries to whoever other than his mother when he is
carried. Extinction is when a dog gets a treat every time it learns a new trick but then it
stops learning after not getting it’s treat. Spontaneous recovery is when a couples go to
therapy to fix there situation and there they learn new things, after they start fighting
again, then they start going to therapy.

3. Explain how Bandura studied observational learning. Discuss what you believe are the
effects of television and video games on behavior. Please be sure to cite an example of
a movie or a video game to relate to this issue.

I believe the effects of television and video games have negative effects on the
behavior. It will lead to aggressive behavior. An example of a video game that will
lead someone to aggressive behavior is Call of Duty. It may make them self- conscious
when they watch a movie that shows unrealistic love. For example, in movie The
Notebook, it shows a love that’s perfect and when people watch it they compare their
loved ones and get upset when their needs are not being met.

4. Distinguish among the various schedules of reinforcement.. Use other examples than
provide with your online text to provide real-world examples.

Positive reinforcement is when a mother gives her daughter a praise. Negative

reinforcement is when a girl vacuums in order to stop her mother from nagging.
Positive punishment is when someone touches a hot stove and feel pain. Negative
punishment is when a son gets grounded after staying up late.
5. Discuss what happened in the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and explain how it violated
ethical standards of research.

In Tuskegee Syphilis Study, the people conducting the study told the community to not
give these men treatment. The purpose for this study was to know the long- term
effects of syphilis on African men. It violated ethical standards of research because
they didn’t have informed consent.

6. Define structuralism and functionalism and the contributions of Wundt and James in
the development of psychology

Wilhelm Wundt focused on structuralism, it involved asking patients to describe their

feelings in order to understand consciousness. William James focused on
functionalism, looking at human’s psychological aspects of the mind.

7. List and define the five major domains, or pillars, of contemporary psychology

The first Domain is Biological it is how our biology influences our behavior.
Influences like sensory, sleep, drug use, and reproductive behavior can affect the
psychology of our minds. The second domain is cognitive, it is the area in which they
use thinking and perception to better understand the psychology of a person. The third
domain is development, it is related to physical maturation, primarily changes from
infancy to adulthood. The fourth domain is social and personality, it is the study of
how the person’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior influence the interaction with others.
The fifth domain is mental and physical health, it is the study of abnormal thoughts.

8. Imagine you work for a drug company that just created a medication to decrease
anxiety in adults. Design an experiment using the appropriate research method that
would allow you to best market your company's new pill. Incorporate and explain the
double blind method

After working in a drug company that just created a medication to decrease anxiety in
adults, I would conduct a 5 year case study of a group of 20 adults with anxiety.10 would
receive a placebo, and 10 would receive the regular medication. Their anxiety levels
would be recorded every month. A case study would allow me to see the difference
between control group and the adults that take medications.

9. Describe the strength and weaknesses of archival, longitudinal, and cross-sectional

research

One strength of archival research is fast and convenient. And one weakness it has is
unreliable. One strength of longitudinal research is that it’s long study. A weakness is
that they require long amount of time. One strength of cross-sectional research is that
it is quick to conduct and the weakness is long research.
10. Explain what a correlation coefficient tells us about the relationship between
variables and explain why correlation does not mean causation.

The correlation coefficient tells us when one variable changes, so does the other.
Correlation does not mean causation because when one variable changes, it doesn’t
mean that it causes the other variable to change.
