Multiplication Strategies

Week 3
Standards

• MGSE4.NBT.5 MULTIPLY a whole number of

up to four digits by a one-digit whole
number, and MULTIPLY two two-digit
numbers, USING strategies based on place
value and the properties of operations.
ILLUSTRATE and EXPLAIN the calculation by
using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or
area models.
Essential questions

•How are multiplication and division

related to each other?
Math Daily Dose

• MULTIPLY. USE BASIC FACTS AND PATTERNS

• 4X1= _________
• 4X10=__________
• 4X100= ___________
• 4X1,000=____________
Math Daily Dose

Ernesto bought 87 boxes of

chocolates. There were 93
chocolates in each box. How many
chocolates did Ernesto buy?
Math Daily Dose

Roberta arranges her trading

cards in 5 rows with 7 trading
cards in each row. George has 2
times as many trading cards as
Roberta. Write a multiplication
equation to represent the total
number of trading cards George
has.
Essential Questions

• What are some strategies we can

use to multiply numbers?
How are multiplication and
division related to each
other?

Multiplying by Multiples of 10, 100, 1000

60 x 700= 42,000

1. Multiply the basic fact (6x7= 42)

2. place the zero(s) from your factors behind the product
of the basic fact.
Multiplying by Multiples of 10, 100, 1000

8 x 700 1. Multiply the basic fact (8x7= 56)

5,600 2.the zero(s) from the equation is placed

behind the product of the basic fact.
Multiplying by Multiples of 10, 100, 1000

4 x 20 1. Multiply the basic fact (4x2= 8)

80 2.the zero(s) from the equation is placed
behind the product of the basic fact.
Multiplying by Multiples of 10, 100, 1000

10 x 200 1. Multiply the basic fact (1x2= 2)

2000 2.the zero(s) from the equation is placed
behind the product of the basic fact.
Estimating Products

When you estimate a product you are getting a rounded answer.

Steps to estimate products

1. Round both factors to the highest place value they both share
(unless one of the factors is a one-digit number)
2. Use a basic multiplication fact to solve the problem (multiply
by multiple of 10,100, 1000)
Estimating Product Examples

• Karen has 45 vases that she wants to fill with 12

flowers each. About how many flowers will she need?
• The word about lets you know you are looking for a rounded/close answer. Not an exact answer.

• 45------> rounds to 45 since its midway between 40 and 50

• x12------> rounds to 10 since its closer to 10 than 20.

• Make a new equation with the new rounded factors

50 x 10 = 500
The estimated product is 500. She needs about 500 flowers to fill her
vases.
Estimating Products Examples cont.

• 3,489 x 6

• 89x 23

• 23x34
