LIS 119: Libraries and Environmental Sustainability

Lecturers: Miss Bibire Badmus/Dr. Adefunke Alabi

Eco-Behaviour/Green Practices in the Library towards Environmental sustainability
Green/sustainable libraries as a library designed to minimize negative
impact on the natural environment and maximize indoor environmental
quality.
Green library are libraries practicing environmental, social and economic
sustainability through various eco-behaviours to minimise effects of
environmental factors on the climate. Its implies that technology,
services and managerial practices within the library are climate friendly.
The green library is sometimes referred to as eco-library,
‘environmentally responsible’ and/or climate neutral library where all
activities, collections, actions, and programs are green-conscious
The Green Library is the library that promotes sustainability is
environmentally sensitive and operates in a way that creates a less
carbon footprint.
what is Eco-behaviour or Green Practice/Green behaviour
Green behaviour refers to any behaviour that is beneficial to the
environment or minimises harm to the environment.
Eco-behaviour/green practice/green initiatives refers to the same
concept for achieving environmental sustainability in the library.
The following are eco-behaviours practiced or that can be practice in
the library:
❑Green library Building
❑Green Printing
❑Energy Conservation
❑Green Collection
❑3Rs (Recycle/Reuse/Reduce)
Green Printing
Globally paper use has reached almost 400 million tons per year. Even
with the advancement and development of modern technologies for
information transfer, libraries cannot overcome ever-growing
consumption of paper.
Digital and Electronic archives, electronic-mail, and the Internet cannot
compete without printed documents being produced out in every
library and information centre.
Therefore, green printing are becoming a priority and an effective
initiative for libraries of all sizes and types.
Green printing is described as the movement in the printing industry
wherein reducing, recycling and reusing are done to overcome the
burden of resources used for printing, copying, and advertising.
Green printing combines sustainability with the printing of paper
products. It involves several practices that prove less harmful to the
environment than customary printing practices.
Eco-friendly printing tips in the library include:
• Using digital formats than print formats whenever possible
• Using recycled paper
• Using recycled printer cartridges
• Purchasing chemical free ink (soy-based ink)
▪• Printing on both sides of the paper
▪When buy printers, copiers, or faxes, look for a model with the lowest
available power level in "sleep" mode
▪Proof documents on a screen when possible and use print preview and
spell check before printing.
Green Library Building
Green library building is a way of behaving in eco-friendly manner. It
involves erecting new building or renovating existing building in such a
way it reduces environmental problem.
It involves a building that uses less water, optimises energy efficiency,
conserve natural resources, generate less waste and provide healthier
Spaces for occupants compare to conventional building. They are eco-friendly
structures and designs that significantly reduces impact of environmental
problem.
Materials used in green constructions
❖Wool Brick: this means wool is added to the clay of the brick. It gives resistance
to cold and wet climate.
❖Sustainable concrete: this is use of crushed glass or wood chips. It gives
resistance to CO2 emission
❖Solar tiles: protect the building, they absorb large portion of energy from the sun
❖Triple glazed windows: stop heat from entering the building or direct sunlight
❖Using of bamboo
Alternatively if it requires renovation of library building, the following
can be done:
Planting of trees and flowers around the library
Provision of natural ventilated environment
Availability of community gardens
Use of insulating windows and structural protections from heat
waves of the sun

If it is a new building selection of building sites is important for

consideration

Energy Conservation
The library is a large consumer of electrical energy. The library building can reduce
energy consumption through energy efficient building, lighting, air conditioning
systems, etc.
❖Use of energy saver bulbs and lighting points
❖Use of solar panels for power supply within the building
❖Not leaving of computers on standby mode when not in use
❖Switching off all electrical appliance at the closure day’s activities
❖Use of environmentally friendly equipment and infrastructure such as computer,
photocopier, printer, Tv set, refrigerator, air conditioner, shelves, furniture, office
supplies
Green Collection
❖Use of non-print information services and resources
❖Digitisation of print information services and sources
❖Encouraging the use of search engines and the Internet
❖Promoting and providing e-books to library users
❖Automation of important library services
❖Development of green collections on climate change and
environmental sustainability
❖Use of customised library app
❖Promotion of environmental literacy through workshop, bookclub,
seminars
3Rs (Recycle/Reuse/Reduce) of materials
Reduce the use of disposable products in the library
Promote recycling of e-waste, deteriorated newspaper, weeded
information resources, old files and memos, old catalogue cards, paper,
aluminium cans, batteries, and electrical devices etc
Install clearly labelled recycling stations throughout your library to
encourage proper waste disposal.
Promotion of book exchange programmes to reduce waste
Conservation of water: reduction on use of water,
Non use of chemical cleaning agents to the clean the library
