Intermec Firmware Guide
Information
Resolution PF2i PF4i PM4i PX4i & PX6i printers all use the same firmware files, so the same build file can be used
on all models, but the version of firmware used may not be supported among certain printers. Current
printers will be able to support the latest firmware, but older printers may be restricted based on the amount of
memory they have. For these older printers with lower memory amounts, it is important to not exceed the highest
supported firmware revision. If you do the printer will not boot up, and recovering the printer will require the use of a
compact flash card.
This product line’s firmware can be classified into 3 groups shown in the table below. The firmware versions' first
number is variable. It will show as 2 when using IPL and 8 when using Fingerprint / Direct Protocol or a simulator. For
this reason the first number of the printer firmware will be represented with X. If the printer’s current version is known,
it may be safely upgraded to the latest within its group. Notice the printer firmware listed in the tables below are
hyperlinked to a download for the appropriate printer firmware files.
X.68 – X.73 Original X.74 – X.76 400 DPI support X.77 – X.82 Multilanguage
Otherwise, to know which firmware versions your printer can support, you must know the Command Language
needed and the amount of memory the printer has. To determine this either print a hardware configuration test label,
or use the printer's item / part number, which is found next to the serial number.
The nomenclature for the item number is explained in the table below.
position possible character description
1 P Printer
2 F M or X Output volume rating
3 2 4 or 6 Print width
4 A B C or D Printer Generation
5 See table 1 Value indicates command language
6 N/A LAN connectivity
7 and 8 N/A I/O option 1
9 and 10 N/A I/O option 2
11 See table 2 Value indicates Memory level RAM / FLASH
12 N/A Media option
13 N/A option 1
14 N/A option 2
15 N/A Print resolution
Printer models starting with PF or PM and generation D or staring with PX and generation C can use the latest
Multilanguage firmware. For previous generations of printers refer to the tables below to find your appropriate
command language and memory level.

6 - Image 32M / Flash 16M
7 - Image 32m / Flash 32M
The table below associates the correct firmware with printer language and memory.
Note: Multilanguage firmware version requires at least 16MB SDRAM and 8MB Flash to work properly. For large
graphic-intensive printing, it is recommended to upgrade printer to 32MB SDRAM and 16MB Flash!
