SERIAL LEARNING EXPERIMENT

1. Aim- To assess the learning status of the subject through serial anticipation method.
2. Introduction- Learning may be defined as any relatively permanent change in behaviour or
behavioural potential produced by experience.

Features of learning-
● Learning always involves some kind of experience.
● Behavioural changes that occur due to learning are relatively permanent.
● Learning is an inferred proсess.

Verbal learning: The process of learning to respond verbally to verbal stimuli, which may include
symbols, nonsense syllables and lists or words.
Serial anticipation : Method is used to study verbal learning in which the participant is required to
learn and recall the whole list of items in serial order. The first item in the list is presented as a
stimulus and the participant is required to recall the next item as the response. In the next trial, the
lost response becomes the stimulus and the participant has to produce the next item.

3. Hypothesis: The increase in the no. of trials will have a positive effect on learning (recall of the
items).

4. Methodology-

A. Variables:

a. Independent variable- The no. of trials

b. Dependent Variable- Learning/recalling

B. Preliminaries :-

(i) Subject's name

(ii) Subject's age
(iii) Subject's sex
(iv) Subject's education
(v) Place of conduction
(vi) Date of conduction

C. Material Required:-

(i) Nonsense syllable cards

(ii) Paper
(iii) Pencil
(iv) Ruled sheet and graph
D. Procedure :-
(a) Rapport Formation- The subject was called to the Humanities lab and was made to sit comfortably.
A friendly conversation was held by asking him about his schooling, his parents, his friends and his
interests in general. When the subject felt at ease he was asked if he was ready to begin the test.
(b) Precautions:-

(i) The room should be well-lit and well-ventilated.

(ii) There shouldn’t be any noise in the room.
(iii) The seating arrangement should be comfortable.
(iv) Instructions should be made clear to the subject.
(v) Proper rapport should be established before starting the practical.

(c) Instructions-
Following instructions were given to the subject:
“ There are 10 cards on which some nonsense syllables are written. I will show you all the cards one by
one and you have to memorise the syllables written on each of them in a serial order. Each card will be
shown to you for 2 seconds, and you have to read the letters written on it aloud. In the 2nd trial, you have
to anticipate the card which would come next to the one which I would show you. This process will be
continued until you correctly anticipate the complete list of 10 items without any error for three
consecutive trials.”

5. TEST ADMINISTRATION- The subject was called to the Humanities lab. After rapport formation,
instructions and test material were provided to the subject. After She/he completed the experiment,
readings were taken for scoring.

6. INTROSPECTIVE REPORT- When I asked him/her about his/her experience during the
experiment, she/he replied, “ The experiment was interesting.”.

7. BEHAVIOURAL OBSERVATION- At the beginning of the experiment, the subject was a little bit
anxious but comfortable with it with time.

✔️

8. SCORING- After showing each card, take down the reading as “ ” , if the subject recalled
correctly, “ ”, if the subject wasn't recalled correctly in recording sheet. Same for all trials, until the
subject correctly anticipates the complete list of 10 items without any error for three consecutive trials.”
After that, take out the percentage of each word remembered correctly.

9. Result Table : (to be drawn on the left side/plane page.)

10. Interpretation- In the present experiment, the hypothesis is proved on the basis of serial
anticipation theory, which is indicated by the result table. That shows the frequency "the first trial was
30% the increment observed increase by 10%. Then, it becomes 40% in the second trial. In third, fourth
and fifth trail, the accuracy was 60%. In sixth, it was 70% and in seventh, it went to 80%. In the 8th,and
other two trials the frequency was constant and maximum of 100% So, we can observe that the constant
growth was observed in all the trials.

11. Conclusion- It is concluded, from the graph and interpretation, that the subject was able to
successfully anticipate the nonsense syllables of the list with the increase in the number of trials.
Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted and proved. The increase in the number of trials have a positive
effect on recall of the items.
